Very interesting mocha brown over pasha 78 on BaT just popped up. It's a 43K mile car. Looking closely, I wonder if it has had a respray? I see what looks like a lot of orange peel on it - more than what I'd expect from the factory. Also, I've not seen polished phone dials before, although from the pictures, only the drivers side are polished and the passenger side are not - they don't appear to match. The headlights are sitting low too, which makes me think a respray at some point. Also,it is missing the hold-down adjustment screw on top of the spider plenum. The mileage is believable based on the engine bay pictures, but more distress to the interior than I would have expected for a 43K miles car. Will be interesting to see how this one fares compared to the cashmeier that recently sold.

How about all the sanding marks under the paint looks to be very poor prep

Non-original door and dash vents too, though that isn’t indicative of much given their poor longevity.

Macco quality paint job. They masked around the hood emblem instead of removing it. A good paint job is 90% prep 10% paint. Anybody can paint, but not many want to spend the proper amount of time to prep. This is why a good paint job will set you back 8k and more.

Maybe Apple downgraded my phone again without me knowing, but half of those pics are blurry as my vision after knocking back a couple dozen strawberry daiquiris. I love
the one where he climbed the tree to get a picture of the leaves while “leaving” the car in the background.

At least the washer tank and filler neck hold fluid.

After looking through the pictures, I really LIKE this car, warts and all.

Well if you look carefully, lots of little things that need attention. For instance, some of the grill brackets are cracked, the dash cracks, the torn seats, the missing fins on some of the vents, the sunken headlights, etc. Still, this is a good base to bring back to glory, but it will cost some dough.

Doug - those are correct. Same as mine, and my car was built 5 after this one. Only the real early ones have the vents like yours. I'm not sure where/when they switched over, but it was in the 78's.Mine are in perfect shape fortunately.

Interesting photos. I checked a couple, EXIF data shows a nice camera shot with manual focus at f1.4 and various shutter speeds... Which means a very shallow depth of field, everything is artistically out of focus except what was focused on. Great for art shots, not so great for documentation purposes.

It looks very nice and the condition seems generally consistent with a low mileage car that has been kept out of the sun. But the small mileage changes over the last 15 years hardly seem to cover the round trip travel between DMV, home and the occasional trip to the German Car Shoppe for service. The engine, wiring, sensors and other bits look clean but has the intake been painted??
This one is at 36k with only a couple days left where the real bidding begins! What a beautiful 89. And a dogleg S4 is such a rare thing to see. Just wow.

is it me, or is the toolkit not completely correct?
The pliers are bare steel handle.

My 89 toolkit has pliers with the plastic handles, but perhaps I have the wrong ones in my car?

Ah, I stand corrected. I thought ‘79 was the changeover.

It it encouraging that BAT was willing to entertain a reserve above $46K for an (admittedly awesome, original, and low miles) S4 5-speed.

I know that 89 well, entertained buying it when it was for sale at a local dealer early this year. Seller paid around 55k for it so I wasn't surprised to see it not sell at 46k. It's a very nice, original car.
