After lots of PB Blaster, a blowtorch, and many whacks with a hammer, I was able to dislodge some very gnarly looking tie rod ends. I'm hoping that this was the source of the clunks I've been hearing on occasion while turning, but there's so much suspension stuff that needs attention that it could be anything. Was hoping to replace my control arms tomorrow, but the caster block bushing package I ordered only came with one, so that might have to be postponed...we'll see, one of the existing ones looked not horrible.

edit: after driving around the block a few times, that noise is still there (suspect shocks and/or struts here, purely based on ugliness and what seems plausible), but DAMN, steering feels a bajillion times smoother. Slowly getting there...

Screwed around a little in SolidWorks. I've been working with some local friends to price out a custom billet clutch fork, I wanted to go push-style in my 951 but keep on hearing about issues with flywheel triggering and needing stops. I know they can be mitigated but I'm exploring options. This fork is bespoke for the 951 TOB, not a cast/modified NA fork like the stock part.

...alternatively, could you use the stock fork to have a new one made out of cast steel instead ?
...or even fabricated ?

Not really interested in cast steel, it's brittle. I've always wanted to make a backyard "foundry" to cast stuff but I'd be looking at professional labor for something like this. And at that price may as well send a file to be machined on CNC machine Im also using the fatigue simulation feature in SW to verify the design's long term integrity.

Plus, there's possibilities here for getting several made if the cost is lower per unit and maybe offering a few. The engineering will be there and i keep seeing people ask for a billet piece. But I'm really busy with other projects.

Replaced old KYB rear shocks (they were pretty bad, I could easily compress them with my hands) with new Bilsteins. Nice to have a quick and easy project on this car for once!

Installed rebuilt Volvo fuel injectors to replace my original/never cleaned 1993 968 injectors. Cured a flat spot off idle. Total cost $36.50 for (5), vs. $700/ea for oem.

Wanted to start them 924s but it was below freezing and with thick 15W oil that's not always a great idea.
Ended up having some fun with my new machine.
What a ridiculously capable machine this is
40° slopes stop on and start from on snow on top of grass? no problem.
It feels like it will climb up and down any place.
Its clearly way too heavy and underpowered for any road fun but off-road it will actually lock up the rear diff and transfer enough power to the rear wheels to make it tail happy which is abundantly fun.
Not so fun is stopping the 2.5 ton thing after it went tail happy on you as it has quite the inertia

Rather handsome if I stare at it enough, at least compared to its more expensive brother with the Porsche badge on.

what's the best way to get the rubber bushings off the axle components? i'm doing a complete overhaul and it looks like some are vulcanized on there...
the inner and outer one on the rear axle strut #22:

recently got the rear axle out. waiting to get the transmission out and put a helical diff in.
ordered a sachs clutch kit.
got new bearings for the drive shaft...

busy days/weeks ahead

when i did mine, i cut off as much of the bushings as i could with a serrated knife (sawed it off as close to metal as i could)...
then i lit it on fire, lol.
scraped the burnt remnants off with a razor blade, then finished cleaning it down to metal with a wire wheel.

I skipped the burning on mine, just cut off the majority with a razor and then got the rest with a wire wheel on an angle grinder. The wire wheels makes quick work of the rubber, but it'll absolutely fill your garage with tiny rubber chunks.

I bought some wheel dollies and finally put the old girl back in the garage to finish her up. I hope to get her back on the road next year.
