Got a endoscope camera yesterday to look in my cylinders - been running rough and hard to start. '86 944 NA. Camera works good. I think this will be useful for more than what I bought it for.

Small amount of coolant in Cylinder #1.

What camera did you get? I've sometimes wished for something like that but last time I looked into it (a few years ago) the options were uber-expensive or very poor image quality.

not rust, just cooked oil residue on the top edge of the cylinder.
they all look like that when used.

Installed new hood struts today. And used my boroscope camera to read the part number off the cylinder head.

Me? I broke the driver's side window. Guess I'll go ahead and cut those door frames out now, since, well, Racecar.

Not going to ask how you broke that window. I have destroyed a windshield or two.

Compression tested my 86 944 NA today.
#1 175 psi
#2 175 psi
#3 173 psi
#4 182 psi
Next test will be leakdown on each cylinder.

Replaced my front driver side wheel bearing (and replaced the rotor while I was in there). Getting the old races out of the hub probably took more than half the total time (and maybe I should have just kept them). Anyway, always feels good to get rid of a nasty noise in your car.

Tomorrow: figure out why the passenger side CV axle is so noisy.

I'd suggest looking at the outer CV joint first. Those seem to be the first to go. You'll need to take the joint off, clean it, and inspect the race to see if it's gouged out. It's very obvious when it's bad. Notice the pitting on the right? That's what you're looking for.

Thanks - I think your suspicion was correct, the outer joint looked a bit rough. Had a new GKN half shaft ready to go, so it was a really easy swap.

So now that I've taken care of my wheel bearing and CV joint noises, I can hear *really well* how noisy my hatch is...the projects never end, do they?
