Keith if the bass can travel from front of the speaker to the rear(due to a poor seal), it will cancel out. The speaker will also distort from this and over excursion can result, if pushed, due to not having the normal air cushion the speaker needs to work properly. Basically it will sound bad(no bass and distorted) and vibrate itself to pieces fairly quickly. It's a great way to kill a perfectly good speaker

My personal favourite for bad speaker installs is when one of them is out of phase. "The speakers are moving heaps, but I can barely hear them!"
As Cyberpunky has said above, the main reason you seal the edge of a speaker to it's box is to prevent the "reverse" or the out of phase part of the speakers movement from reaching the listener. If you get both sets of vibration, they cancel each other out.
The cushion of air in a speaker box is much less of an issue unless you're referring to high powered subs or very high powered speakers with a large amount of travel.

If a *sound* is cancelled out then there is no sound and it cannot have a listener
I know it's semantics, but it is the out of phase sound reaching the in phase sound, at the speaker, that results in cancellation, not at the listener. Sound arriving at the listener and cancelling out, does occur and is known as a standing wave cancellation but that is due to speaker placement relative to the listener, and is not the issue that Keith needs to address
Although full range car speakers are designed to go in a large leaky box(like a door), having no cushioning at all, will result in over excursion, if turned up to even moderate volume levels so is definitely an issue

Tore the 931 to pieces... oops! Man I love that turbo bumper, something I would have totally done to my 924S. Speaking of that pretty little thing, she sure is having fun racing!

I've been cleaning and detailing the car after having it at 944Fest....pretty dusty on those infield paths!
I had the top dropped for many hours as well, so the interior was all dusty too! It gave me some inspiration though to tackle some more small projects on the car. It's nice working on the car in the late afternoon with the big door open.
While I was at it, I pulled the remote trunk/hatch release as it was unhooked for many years. Found a second jack in the spare tire well...TWO?! Will be redoing the carpeting in the trunk area..Wow the stock stuff sure is heavy with all the sound deadner!!!!

Started to drive 'er to work and the steering started to get noisy/buzzy. Stopped and sure enough, no fluid. Took her home and parked it. No sign of fluid under the hood, usual wet spots under the car but no sign of a catastrophic failure. It has a new reservoir and hose and I had recently changed the fluid so I hope it's just my incompetence not a failure. After work, up on the stands again and I'll try and find the black hole that took my fluid.

Finished redoing the carpet in the trunk and rear seat back. I deleted the spare tire hump too when I removed the spare tire. Looks great. Nice and neat/clean.
I weighed all the parts I removed.
Trunk/hatch release motor hard to measure, but approx 1lb
Rear carpet 21 lbs
Spare tire 32 lbs
Jack/tools 6 lbs
Weight added approx 2 lbs
