You're right, no Android Auto on PCM 4, just Apple CarPlay. They have new PCM head units for classic 997 gen 911's and 987 gen Boxster/Cayman that have android auto. So it's only a matter of time before there's a new head unit for the 991 gen 911 and 981/982 gen Boxster/Cayman I think.

Apple CarPlay news release: https://www.porsche.com/stories/inno...-in-a-porsche/.
Android Auto news release: https://www.porsche.com/stories/inno...-android-auto/

I'm sure this topic has been beat to death in the 718 forum so I apologize for bringing it up in this thread.

No worries; it's good info to have. So was AA offered before, and not now? Or it was never offered? I'm still confused what exactly changed with the 2024+ head unit. Besides getting rid of the CD player, it reportedly cannot be coded to add Nav after the fact, like prior units. But yes, glad it includes CP now, because that's all I need. Hey, a question: When you're connected to CP (wired), do you still need Bluetooth or not? I'm afraid the very old 2.1 version on our cars might be obsolete soon. I could always use Spotify from CP, but if I need BT, it might not be compatible soon. Hope that's not the case. Also curious if I'd notice a difference between Spotify via Bluetooth, and via CarPlay (I'll have Burmester). I have the highest resolution on Spotify settings. Thanks gang.

For your first qustion, It appears AA was not offered before on the 718 and is not available now. The 718 was launched with CP... so MY 2017 718 on it has it. The MY 2022 992 911 came with AA (PCM 6) but the first 2 years of the generation did not (PCM 5, I believe).

As far as wired and bluetooth connectivity, and how they interact, I do not know. For my 2022 911, CP worked wirelessly via BT but I'm not sure if plugging in with USB made any difference as far as CP is concerned. It may just charge your phone for all I can remember... I always connected vie BT. For my Ford Ranger you have to use wired USB to use CarPlay. Otherwise BT just lets you stream music and make phone calls. I think the 718 is similar to my Ford Ranger... i.e. you have to use wired to use CP but you can still stream and make phone calls with BT.

My '22 Macan GTS also has wireless CP, but my limited knowledge of CP is that you need Wi-Fi AND BT for that to work. It's not a regular Wi-Fi network, but a weird code (bunch of random letters and numbers). If you turn Wi-Fi on your phone off, then no wireless CP. Anyway, Wi-Fi can transfer a lot more data than BT, and same thing with a USB cable, BUT I don't know if streaming Spotify sounds better with CP (whether wireless or wired), than just streaming over BT. I have the highest fidelity on Spotify, but it's not Tidal, which is actually hi-fi. Or maybe CP is better, but we can't hear the difference? Just curious about that, now that I'll have Burmester, which is supposed to be a higher-end stereo. Hopefully somebody knows about that. Thanks.

For PCM 6 on the 992, I don't think wi-fi is needed to use CP. At least not that I can remember but this video confirms that I think:
I connected my phone via wi-fi but I didn't need it for anything, and I didn't feel like troubleshooting it.

There are some wireless solutions to connect your phone via BT to a hub that is wired to the USB in the console. https://www.ottocast.com/collections...roducts/u2-air
I searched this forum for this device and I saw good and negative reviews.

That video didn't say, but I know for a fact you need Wi-Fi on, or WIRELESS CP doesn't work. I didn't know why it wasn't working, and that was the reason (my daughter schooled me. Ha ha). That's why I know now.

I’m a little confused here.

The 718 CP is wired via the center console.

You can get a 3rd party dongle to connect “wirelessly”.

Plenty on threads on dongles.

I'll look for one of those threads then. The only thing I've seen on here so far is a post or two for OttoCast and CarKit..

We were just discussing wireless on newer PCM's in the 911 and Macan as a comparison to the 718 PCM.

There are many 2024 Boxster S's in dealer inventory - it seems - but I prefer to order one and get it in 2025, at least I hope that's how it works out.

The other 12V socket is in the passenger foot well, right? Good idea to get the smoking package then.
If you are an Apple user, you wont even need to worry about not having cell coverage anymore. Later versions of iOS 18 are going to be offering offline maps for Apple Maps which basically takes care of that.

Apple Carplay is standard on all 718 models after 2023 which is when it became standard. Android Auto while on the PCM, is not activated, currently there is a way to activate it if you have a 2023 or older, but as of right now 2024+ MY are still locked even though the function is on there. However this can all be bypassed with the Carlinkit 4.0 which i've been using ever since i took delivery of my 2024 BGTS.

Good to know. I guess CarPlay was an option previous to 2023... which is why I see CarPlay module available for the 718 on the Tequipment site ($600), which confused me even more, but now I know why.

At least we got something instead of the CD player. Ha ha. I'm personally not interested in wireless CP, since I always keep my phone connected, and the center console USB port happens to be the data one, so great. If I needed a visible cable for CP (like a front port), then I'd look into a wireless module, but thankfully that's not the case.

Well, it looks like the Amethyst Ace has moored at Sparrows Point Ro-Ro Port in Maryland, unloaded (hopefully my BGTS) and is underway to Mexico. Has anyone expecting a delivery to the port near Baltimore on the Amethyst Ace had their TYD update to Step 9 yet? Mine hasn’t.

Glad you guys cleared the potential strike. We'll see what happens to our cars. And even though that ship stopped in Mexico, it should also clear Houston and Freeport before Oct 01, but it'll probably be a squeaker.

People use Freeport and Houston interchangeably…but the port is Freeport.

Previously they did use Houston.

Don’t know when they made the change as I had a car enter Houston 4 years ago.

Strike? I’d be more worried about the Gulf WX this week.

There's a strike planned starting Oct 01 for all eastern ports, plus Houston (Freeport is not included). But I'm almost sure Biden would call it off at the last minute if it's imminent, since it'd be devastating to the economy. And just force them to reach a deal without striking. But we'll see. If it happens, it'd cause massive delays everywhere. And what's 'WX'? Another storm? Don't get those initials.
