At the 'Ring, shout yourself a ringtaxi ride of some sort. Spent a weekend there back in '01 in 928GTS. Highlight, however, was a passenger ride in a 964 RS with 6 pt harness etc - 8 minute bungy jump. You're unlikely to have more fun fully clothed.
Self drive is a bucket list item - you just gotta do it, but do the fast lap with someone who knows what they're doing as well.

If the itinerary & budget allow - Spa has to be up there as a number 2 after the 'Ring.
Like the other great road-based tracks (Le Mans / Monza) it is a hugely fast long lap - the type of track which is no longer built.
On a European Driving trip I'd be looking at the following:
(1) Nurburgring;
(2) Spa;
(3) Imola;
(4) Monza.
The 'Ring & Spa double can be covered in a long weekend.

Thanks Tim - Spa was my first choice but doesn't look doable in terms of track open days or DE options in our time frame. The Ring fits the schedule and we'll get a full day on track in a DE environment - not a touristfahrten day! 18-19 Sep is locked in.
Will save Spa for the next trip - always need an excuse for the return journey. Pretty excited about this one as missed a factory tour last time - we are confirmed on that this time plus Munich around beerfest time... All good!!

You could also try Theo from rentracecar.com
I've rented a few race cars from him in the past. He's a great bloke and loves New Zealanders. The selection of cars is also very good and he usually comes out with you for some "sighting" laps.
There are a few others to choose from, but Theo has been around for years and I've always found him bloody great to deal with.
The ring is amazing... It will be a great trip. My 2c is to only go 70% and maybe rent something like a VW Golf GTI. They are forgiving, and the reality is you won't do an amazing lap whilst you are there as it's just too big to learn in a short space of time.
Have fun!!

Makes 2 of us!
Thanks Matt - they are on the list as they're affiliated with the group running the DE. They have the biggest range as well. Makes it a hard choice though - caged Swift for the budget fun factor or Cayman GTS for the Porsche experience? I'm tempted to try the Toyota 86 as very similar performance, weight, power & balance etc to the 944 therefore familiar. Caged, sports seats & suspension plus r comps...!
