Making weight is not hard nor cost $. I spent about 40 hours going from one end to the other removing anything that was not needed. I got the car down to 2550 with a 1/2 tank of gas, stock wheels and a cool suit cooler.
The answer to why SPEC 996 ver Stock H is a SPEC class is much better than stock classes that have wide open options to you can pick from. I am sure I could spend $20k more and win a lot of Stock H races. But what about the RSA's with "hot" engines, motons, hoosiers, LSD's. Without making this a long read there are more people out there that want a spec class to even the playing field between drivers than not. Look at Spec Box this year, High Plains Race there were over 20 and Hallett Race last month there were over 24! There was no one standing around talking about who had what shocks or how someone won because they had what tires. They were just talking about how good of a driver so and so was.
Bottom line is I want to know everyone started with all the same parts I did.

Raptor - My brother-in-law Chuck bought Vali's car. I am ramping him up to club race with us next year. I am working on the car now, and should have it at ECR this weekend. We both will be at TWS for the Lone Star DE Dec. 4 & 5th.

i see this over and over again.
996 spec is a good class and TX is doing well with it.
but....
"H" can be very $$$ or very cheap.
so is "spec 996"...
not all spec are the same.......
not all BSR are the same.....
not all SM are the same...

Interestingly it didn't take off here on the West, where it started, I believe. At one point there were three cars running with the POC; there hasn't been one at the events this year.

i was at this years POC LS event.
my GUESS of why it didn't take off.... it's much more money than BSR. once you put on moton, the grippier tires, the guys realized that if you drop another 200 lbs, you can get almost to cup car speed. thus, once gone that far, why not keep on going... that's why you dont see many spec 996 here.

also as you know that west coast PCA aint the same as the rest of the country. certainly here in nor cal. we dont get racers from out of state. ok, some from NV. but that's it. on east coast, even pca race is like le mans, everyone everything shows up.

are you still in spec 996 or you plan to do GT3 class in POC?

Which is EXACTLY why the guys that made the Spec 996 rules decided on NOT spec'ing the Hoosiers and the Motons, atleast that would be my guess.
The cars are fast, it is a natural progression up from Spec Box but not nearly as $$$$ as a Cup, in building and maintaining.

Also both Spec Box and Spec 996 slide nicely into the NASA GTS series. Last year Vali P. (west coaster Spec 996 car) won the NASA Nationals class GTS3 in his Spec 996 with a tire change and a little weight change. This year he won NASA GTS2 at the NAtionals with his Spec Boxster !

Glad to see that they realized the cost of the sticky rubbers was not the only factor. How long those tires last and how much they cost are also issues. When everyone is running on the same tires it doesn't really matter anyway, better to keep the tire cost down and reliabilty up !

The cars are a blast and with a little tweaking.....

Hoosier R6's are the Spec unless it recently changed.

Both Moton and JRZ were approached about supplying dampers for the series. Moton responded with a single adjustable shock, no springs, and no top hats for about the same price as JRZ offered 2-way RS's, the correct sized Eibach springs, and monoballs. It was a easy choice. I still run the RS's with the same 700/900 springs on my 2650lb. w/driver 996. They work great on Hoosiers or slicks....

I'm glad to see the series working in Texas. We actually had 4-996 Specs at Laguna in Aug. 09' but that was the only time. I was the only one running consistantly then with our new GT classes this year (like NASA's GTS) I chose to lighten the car and run both NASA and POC. It was a smart decision, I've won 8-1/2 sets of Yokohama slicks so far this year with 2 weekends left.....

As for build costs, it's really not much more than building a Spec Box. You spend more for a LSD, but you don't have to buy a fiberglass roof. JRZ are a little more than the PSS9's but not that much. Everything else is comparable....

BFG R1's are the PCA spec tire, with R888's as rain tires. No one really loves the 888's, but they make a good rain tire that can also be run in transition conditions. The R1's are a very nice tire that hold their grip pretty consistently out to about 30 to 35 HC's. You can get two race weekends out of the R1's and still have plenty of tire left for DE's and practice.

John, you should consider putting your car back to spec and coming out to TWS in March.
