“And then I think a few things happened at once. My dad who was a vet, he was a huge car enthusiast, which I guess that’s obviously where things rubbed off on me. Anyway, he wanted to retire when he was 60, and he kind of semi-retired at 62, moved up with my mum to Yorkshire and then did locums until he was 65, and then he was fully retired.
“If I’m honest, it’s slightly emotional to say it, but he kind of lost his way a bit in his retirement. I thought he’d be very happy to continue to tinker around on cars and stuff, and he just lost his mojo a bit.”
“A kind of combination of that, and then two of the people that I respect the most, Bernie [Ecclestone] and Roger Penske, I asked them both, “What’s your secret?’ Because they’ve kept going and going and for their age, they’re phenomenally mentally agile and physically agile.”
“They both said that old thing that the brain is like a muscle, it needs exercise, and so you need to keep doing that.”
“Also, I’ve wanted to work in motor racing as a designer since I was the age of eight or 10, and I’ve been lucky enough to fulfil that ambition, to have got that first job and been in motor racing ever since – and so every day has just been a bonus really.”
“I just love what I do. So at some point, I guess I’ll have a bit of a holiday. As Forrest Gump said at the end of his long run, ‘I feel a little bit tired at the moment’, but at some point, I’ll probably go again.”

TL;DR - I may take a break, but I will end up at a new team.

Looks like Red Bull's calibrations are all of a sudden off... might have to refer back to the A spec for the weekend.

Red Bull are a second slower in Imola says Helmut Marko.
Red Bull Racing brought upgrades to Imola, but they didn't help the reigning world champions achieve good results in the first and second free practice sessions. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were slower than the Ferraris and McLarens, and in FP2, even both Mercedes were faster. Helmut Marko, Red Bull's advisor, was shocked by their pace.
"We are relatively further away [from the lead] now than earlier today. We changed things about the set-up, but in that, we don't seem to have made the right choice."
"We have not found the grip yet, neither with the softs nor with the medium tyres. In the long runs we are a second slower,"

Max's car looked very unstable. Very odd how far off the 'improved' car was today. My guess is they'll have it sorted for FP3.

All that talent and yet Ferrari will find a way to lose. Plus, I'll bet LEC outdrives the aging HAM.

"Mmmm, aging ham" sounds like something Homer Simpson would drool over!

Which reminds me, my favorite driver abbreviation team combo was HAMBOT, it had a good ring to it, and my Finnish brother VB77!

Watching the opening of FP1 this morning took me back to when I first started following F1 in the mid to late '60's- blue skies, beautiful rolling hills in the background, and a REAL track layout. Sure I think about 1994 but then I'd also not like Austria or Brands Hatch as my favourite two drivers lost their lives at those tracks in '71 and '75. Something about places like Imola, Spa, Silverstone, etc and of course, next weekend at Monaco... now all we need is some real sound, and a big diet!!

FP3 and quali tomorrow will be very interesting, to see where Max ends up. Will McL still be up there??? And will the tifosi be happy???

“Hwre comes the most myopic and toxic fan base in the history of F1”

multi21: I’ve been a fan of F1 for over 50 years now, and I am as you know a Lewis Hamilton fan, and have been since he came into the sport. I not only think his accomplishments, which are historic when looked at objectively, but how he was able to rise to the pinnacle of the World’s best racing series as a lower middle class kid growing up in the UK, say something incredibly positive about him as a person.

I’m not a fan of his choice in clothing, but neither am I 30 years old anymore, and I know that his efforts to promote diversity and inclusion into the upper echelons of Motorsport can rub people the wrong way; (although encouraging people of colour or that are female, to strive to be the very best that they can be by using their driving abilities doesn’t seem to me to be such a bad thing; perhaps I’m wrong?). Without a doubt his popularity within the ‘social media community’ irks many, including me at times but that popularity has helped broaden the appeal of F1 to a vast number of people who were never interested in it before, and that influx of fans has helped the sport tremendously recently and brought about huge changes. Would we be potentially talking about a 4th GP within the US if not for the mass influx of fans within recent years, of which support for Hamilton has been a part? Perhaps; but I think not.

I guess what I’m asking you is this: how am I a part of the “most myopic and toxic fan base in the history of F1” because of my support for a specific driver who has had a real influence in promoting and growing the sport, which has enabled me to enjoy many more races per year than in it’s history?

I think what Multi21 is referring to is that among the "F1 purists" a true F1 fan supports a team. Support of a individual driver is considered lowbrow.

Max doing what Max does.
