Great point.

The F1 landscape would be very different had Massi not gone brain dead. I think Lewis may have retired as the 8 time champion at that point. Had that happened, I think the grid could be different than today.

For all those complaining about “Crofty” in the broadcast booth, your prayers have been answered - at least for 3 races this year.

Harry Benjamin is gearing up for his debut as the lead commentator for Sky F1 at Imola, stepping in for David Croft during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
With the F1 2024 calendar expanding to a record 24 rounds, Croft will be taking a break from three race weekends, including Emilia Romagna, Austria, and Azerbaijan GPs.

Benjamin expressed his excitement about the opportunity to join the Sky F1 team.
Joining Benjamin in the commentary box at Imola will be former F1 driver Karun Chandhok, who has been part of Sky's Formula 1 coverage since 2019.

“Yeah, very excited. I mean, big shoes to fill, but I’m looking forward to it.

“What a track to do it at as well, Imola, and stood alongside Karun too. I’m honoured.”

I listened to the WTF1 Podcast all last year when he was the host, he was great. Was surprised when he left, but makes sense, big big career advancement! Now WTF1 Podcast is horrible and unable to make it through an episode.

Even considering 30 years ago I love Imola and am looking forward to it. I'd like to see Ant in the booth as well, maybe rotating with Nico. I think his analysis during the segments of quali is always very interesting and educational.

There seems to be something going on between FOM and the FIA with regards to the Andretti entry and other friction

I haven't had the pleasure of listening to that podcast. I've got a couple on rotation, "Beyond the Grid with Tom Clarkson" is fantastic. I also listen to "F1 Nation" which has interviews post race with several of the drivers, team principals as well as Damon Hill and some other international journalists.

Opinions are like a holes, we all have one, but I personally think Rosberg is horrible as a commentator.

Great driver, probably a fine guy to grab a pint and an schnitzel with, but he's missing the EQ. Totally awkward and unrelatable.

Cheers

Matt

Those are both good!

Check out The Race F1 Podcast, The Race F1 Tech Show (has former Tech Director and Car designer Gary Anderson), and Formula For Success (FFS) which is David Coulthard with Eddie Jordan talking glory days as well as current F1.

Oh and skip WTF1 now, it's horrible

I've agreed with what you have said for a long time now, but more recently, I see the value in Rosberg's commentary, which is far more accurate than all the other commentators. There is something awkward and even unlikable about him, but I am trying to see past that and focus on the information.

I love David Coulthard as he brings something of a "James Hunt vibe" to the broadcast booth with he irreverent comments.

There's been some speculation online about whether Newey would just retire from F1 altogether, however this little snippet from Imola gives a more clear direction of his intentions:

“If you’d asked me 15 years ago, at the age of 65, would I seriously be considering changing teams, going somewhere else and doing another four or five years, I’d have said you’re absolutely mad.”
“And then I think a few things happened at once. My dad who was a vet, he was a huge car enthusiast, which I guess that’s obviously where things rubbed off on me. Anyway, he wanted to retire when he was 60, and he kind of semi-retired at 62, moved up with my mum to Yorkshire and then did locums until he was 65, and then he was fully retired.
“If I’m honest, it’s slightly emotional to say it, but he kind of lost his way a bit in his retirement. I thought he’d be very happy to continue to tinker around on cars and stuff, and he just lost his mojo a bit.”
“A kind of combination of that, and then two of the people that I respect the most, Bernie [Ecclestone] and Roger Penske, I asked them both, “What’s your secret?’ Because they’ve kept going and going and for their age, they’re phenomenally mentally agile and physically agile.”
“They both said that old thing that the brain is like a muscle, it needs exercise, and so you need to keep doing that.”
“Also, I’ve wanted to work in motor racing as a designer since I was the age of eight or 10, and I’ve been lucky enough to fulfil that ambition, to have got that first job and been in motor racing ever since – and so every day has just been a bonus really.”
“I just love what I do. So at some point, I guess I’ll have a bit of a holiday. As Forrest Gump said at the end of his long run, ‘I feel a little bit tired at the moment’, but at some point, I’ll probably go again.”
