Cautionary Tale of Oil Leak (timing cover)
#361
My 2016 Macan S was just at dealer today for seat recall and to give me an estimate for my oil leak. Timing chain cover leak. They quoted $15,018 to fix😱. I have all the paperwork.. When I told them I’m not having it fixed, the price went down to $12,800. I said thanks but no thanks… Later having a chat with service rep. she whispered to me that she had talked to technician and asked him about it and he said “do nothing, just drive it”. It’s a minor leak, btw, I was advised not to have engine bay detailed by detailer as they’ve had some get worse afterwards!?
They also told me the radiator flaps aren’t opening and closing properly and they quoted $1100 to fix that. It’s a $64 motor🤦🏻♂️

Does anyone happen to know if the timing chain cover issue was corrected for the new generation macan GTS (2020+)?
We were going to take our 18 GTS in for the timing chain cover fix this month for the repair under warranty, but unfortunately she was hit by a drunk driver last night and the car is looking like a total loss. Thankfully she is ok. Reason I ask, it might be easier to just get into a newer GTS if the problem has for sure been remedied by Porsche in the newest iteration.
TIA

Well, didn’t dodge the bullet. Dry at 30k miles. This at 35k oil change. ‘18 Turbo. Just got back from surgery. Had seeping belt tensioner also replaced. All covered. Engine dropped. Had new thermostat and water pump changed “while in there.” 2+ pages of parts down to washers etc. Hasn’t diminished my enthusiasm but certainly understand disgruntled out of warranty owners.

- they're designed to decrease drag when cooling isn't needed and help the motor get up to temp.
- if it's broken I don't see much of a down side to removing them.
- irrc, there's a thread somewhere of someone swapping the motor, pita...

2017 Macan s with timing cover leak discovered by Porsche service. Quoted $15k to repair in city in Texas. Any idea what will happen if I don’t repair this? Any experience about whether it worsens and what problems it will cause?

Same quote I got here in NJ… $15,018.86 to be exact. To somewhat answer zamvix question about whether it worsens etc…. My service advisor on the QT, told me the technician said “drive it… don’t bother fixing it”, regarding my timing chain cover leak. Now I don’t think that quite answers your question.. but my guy said he wouldn’t do anything. So… whatever that means??

There's a temporary fix with consists of just replacing a few of the top bolts without removing the engine in order to remove and reseal the entire cover. I believe that fix was around $1500 and will buy a few thousand more miles without a major leak. The good thing about this leak is that it's up front so it's away from exhaust components making an engine fire not that likely and is probably the main reason why Porsche hasn't issued a recall. The bad thing is that it can eventually coat all the belts and pulleys.

I hear ya… but the breakdown was something like $10,500 in labor, The rest in parts! I don’t get it either, it looks like just a bunch of screws, some gaskets and fuel lines, Oil, coolant, etc. The parts weren’t itemized individually so I have no idea how they got to >$4500 in parts. Ridiculous

I didn’t look at my dealers hourly rate, but 25 hours of labor to come up with $10,500 is $420 per hour. Ummm, really?😳🤬. I can’t find my quote papers at the moment and iirc it did not list labor hours, but I think from other threads Porsche TSB specifies 20 hours to do the job. Seems like it would take more, but I think that’s the rate. So the hourly tech rate is even higher? 🤦🏻♂️
