Is the roof stiffener where you attached and lock the top in place or whatever you want to call it still carbon on the new version? Kinda hard to tell from any of the pics I have seen.

there's nothing especially unique about the 987 Spyder apart from the ability to drive with the sun cap on for that California feel

the 987 spyder window was from the 987 cayman

the 981 spyder has 3.8 liter engine AND bigger 6 pot brakes. 987 spyder has standard 3.4 and standard brakes.

The big thing on the Spyder is that it fixed that awkward roofline on the 987 Boxster. That roofline is *the* reason why I never got a 987. On the 981, Porsche got the roofline right to begin with, so the Spyder doesn’t look that much improved.

I don't think so, I think his as yours or mine is just a personal opinion. I personally think the 981 is a beautiful design. We had a 2015 981 BS as a loaner waiting for a part for my wife's Macan turbo, I grew to appreciate the car through the week for what it was...a beautiful car.

The 981 Spyder is great I just wonder if that price point will dampen sales.

A personal opinion can be melodramatic. It does not mean it is objectively wrong. I’m merely pointing out that even *if* he really thought they looked like totally different cars and that there is no way he could *ever* possibly mistake one for another, he should be open to the possibility that many others find the Spyder very similar to the Boxster.

Let’s keep things in perspective: The differences on the body are the top, the window, the trunklid, the wheels, and the stripe. Not many people really think this makes a whole new car. If you know of any, I have some brand new “cars” to sell them at a special price.

... about $20k on top of a Boxster S, right? For a 3.8, big brakes, and some unique body panels? That is not a bad deal by Porsche standards.

A 30% price increase compared to the 987 version only works out to be 6% per year or so. Not too outrageous for a luxury good...

Yes I think 20k is the difference before a single option of course the 987 Spyder came with the Sport buckets standard where the 981 Spyder has a 4k plus add-on.

Two things: at 90k plus the Spyder starts really pushing many other cars buttons and for that kind of cash why didn't they give it the GT3 brakes and the seats standard?
Two- What a freaking deal the GT4 is!

Coincidentally, my 2006 E-class, 2011 Spyder (in early 2010), and 2011 X5d were all roughly the same MSRP. Current price for comparably equipped subsequent generation E-class and X5 are still mid-$60s. Spyder is now $90k. Sorry, but that is outrageous.

Umm, no. The 987.2 Spyder made use of the aluminum doors and sports buckets seats from the GT3 at the time. It also had an aluminum rear deck lid and the lightest weight wheels Porsche made. At the time, it felt like Porsche raided the GT3 parts bin and created the Caymen R and Boxster Spyder. Now it seems like the re-cast the Cayman R as a GT4, still using GT3 parts.

With all the PTS issues, I'm betting PTS is not an option and another reason I won't make the jump.

You make a good point. I never would have considered a 987 Boxster or Cayman because of the roofline, but loved (and was an early adopter of) the Spyder because of design and concept. Glowing reviews of its handling came later.

Yeah, I get that it’s pricey compared to a 2011 Spyder. But I think a lot of that just reflects how expensive Boxsters in general have become over the last 5 years, nothing particular about the Spyder. I configured myself a 981 Spyder online, checking all the options available on the Spyder that I put on my base Boxster build (the only thing I couldn’t configure was seat ventilation and 19" wheels). The Spyder build came out to $87K. This isn’t bad, since my base Boxster config MSRP’d at $67k (most of which were just basic options like X73, PSE, PTV, PDLS, 19" wheels - mostly standard on the Spyder)

So, for my particular configuration, an equivalent Spyder would cost only $20k above what my *base* Boxster build cost before the 3.8 conversion. Not bad at all.

It's not cheap…but by Porsche pricing going from 320HP to 375HP it is a relative bargain…not counting the other bits that come along as well.
