I notice the exhaust routes very closely around TC, with no real heat shielding, and with there being only a small amount of fluid in the TC, I am betting heat is also partly to factor in.
Has anyone thought about putting some exhaust wrap around the pipes that run by the TC, while doing all the other regular maintenance like changing the fluid?
The pipes aren't that close and while moving there is a ton of airflow under the car. I don't think this is a real issue.

This is the stuff. Easy to get at Advance, Carquest, etc. The Ford stuff someone else mentioned is hard to find retail. If used it twice on a miserable TC.

Hi All,

Adding to the list.

2011 S, 126k miles

9/15/2016 had the transfer case replaced at a local dealer, 84k miles

Yesterday was told I need a new transfer case again @ 126k miles. Seems a bit crazy. I have never replaced a transfer case on any other vehicles I have owned. Now 2 in less that 4 years on the same vehicle.

I have contacted Porsche NA for some sort of relief. I don't have any expectations.

I would also ask, is it crazy difficult to replace myself? I am fairly capable. Also, can I do it on jack stands or does it sort of require a lift? Dealer quotes 5k, I know it can be done for a lot less.

Thanks,
-Eric

Eric, sorry to hear that. Have you tried fluid changes in your TC? For many people, a simple fluid swap will resolve the issues and prolong its life.

You can do it. A new case is still big bucks. Parts to rebuild are roughly $500.00 but you have to be careful to get the correct set - chain width being most important. Buried in one the these TC threads is info
on the guy in Europe selling parts and a youtube vid of the rebuild process.

But for $40 or so on a litre of Ravenol and a $12 bottle of friction modifier you might be pleasantly surprised by the results of a fluid swap. You only need 3 oz or so of the friction modifier to smooth things out.

Just be sure to remove the fill plug before the drain, and don't crack the case when reinstalling the drain plug (which too many of us have done).

Thank you for this information. I will definitely look for the video you mention as well and trying the fluid change.

My in-service date was May 2011. So I think I might be covered until next May.

Looks like I’ll be keeping my 2015 Cayenne for one more year :-)

I was going to trade it in before the warranty expires this December over this TC issue. It feels like going over train tracks now and was denied a swap once already. Wasn’t going to pay $5k out of pocket and not come away with a newer car.

Great news on the extended warranty. As someone with a used 2016 S that already had the transfer case replaced once under prior ownership and had it's TC fluid replaced twice under my ownership (hoping to preserve this case!) I'm ecstatic that Porsche took this step.

In the Macan forum. It's been verified with a dealer's service department.
