I had a Speciale several years ago, and when I went to sell it, I got to see how annoying people can be with making offers they can’t complete. It ended up going back to the dealer for a $10k loss off my purchase price (which didn’t turn out that bad when I saw how much they dropped during the months following sale...). I’ve definitely bought more cars off forums than I’ve been able to sell when it’s time to flip...

Speaking of BMWs, I just picked up a Z4 M40i. It’s been around 20 years since my last BMW (2000 325 Xi), and it wasn’t really on my radar until I unloaded my 2014 TTS Cab and wanted an easy NYC-parking convertible for my commutes. Absolutely in love with the Z4 M40i as a daily fun driver. Not sure about the rest of their lineup. I did test drive an M4 convertible as well, but it seemed a little like a box with wheels that had trouble putting down the power it could output...

I am a longtime BMW guy, because I could never afford a 911 or did not have enough space to garage it. When you make the jump to Porsche it is complete sticker shock. Also, when going up to Porsche pricing you have to start worrying about resale, P-people are very picky. rightfully so, BMW people not so much. I have bought and sold many parts, cars, and accessories with other BMW people over the years and it is much more casual. As the money goes up, so does the angst.

Yeah, and with the jump from Porsche to Ferrari re-sale, you enter the realm of every extra mile and every day that an annual service gap exists in its history, you have damaged goods. “Oh, I’m sorry Sir, I didn’t realize you actually drove the car; you do realize this is a Ferrari, no?!

I had a guy tell me, on my 10kmi Speciale: “if I buy this and put a couple thousand miles on it, from here, I pretty much have to give it away after I’m done”. Evidentially, after 10kmi, they self destruct.

Personally, I loved the Speciale. The last great NA Ferrari. 458s handle like no other once you’re used to the sensitivity of the throttle and handling. I was never able to get comfortable driving a $400k vehicle (~350k sticker). I couldn’t enjoy it like I’ve been able to enjoy $200k or lower priced sports cars.

That being said, market values seem to track similar to any other semi-collectible vehicle nowadays. They spiked around $50k higher than sticker price with low mile examples in the first second-hand market, and they seemed to have come down to near sticker price lately, likely because the Pista was released.

Down the road, when I have another garage bay available again, and the market is more stable, I would love to re-add a 458 Spider to the mix. Ideally, I’d love to have a 458 of one iteration or another next the 997.2 GT3 RS as we drive into the sunset of fossil fuel vehicles (or the sunset of the apocalypse—I’m good with either one at this point... roflmao).

Spider is the 458 I'd go back for; not speciale. That's just my personal opinion. For the hard-core track oriented V8's I'll take the scud. I'd take the CS if that tranny wasn't so so god awful at cruising speeds.

I’m following up with some information on the above car for the community / for anyone who is interested in buying it. About a month ago I looked into this car for consideration to buy. I decided not to move forward but here is what I was able to ascertain. Note, this was about a month ago, I do not recall every detail but here is the general background I learned:

Car is being sold by consignment at Allen Motors. The car has been at the dealership for ~2 years for sale, started at a price around $170K and has been dropped over time to where it is now at $140k.

Three owner car. I do not know much about the original owner (location Miami) except that the car was setup for track use. The the car has aftermarket suspension arms and full spherical bearings. Also, I was told the shifter had been angled towards the driver which ended up the making the car hard to get into reverse. The first owner had the car for the majority of the miles, ~16K miles.

Second owner, out of LA, bought the car site unseen from Miami. The 2nd owner owns a number of car dealership in the LA area. He bought the car to enjoy, however soon realized that he was unable to easily get the car into reverse. Took the car into one of L.A.’s Porsche dealership (intentionally not mentioning which one) where the tech who was attempting to fix the transmission removed a pin on the gearbox and the shifter lost engagement. Apparently this accident would result in the need to rebuild the gear box. With the car new to the owner, he wanted to drive the and not wait for the rebuild of the original gear box. A rebuilt gearbox was bought from Porsche out which was located in a warehouse in Canada and came with a warranty. While doing the transmission repair, the owner and the shop who performed the repairs (LA Workshop 5001 Inc) decided to do a number of other maintenance items including rear main seal, pinned coolant pipes, Shark Works coolant metal pipes, new cable & shifter lever. I do not have the full list of items performed, this was a verbal recollection from a knowledgeable party. The second owner spent nearly $23K on the transmission replacement and other items listed above (bulk of the expense being the transmission). The owner didn’t skimp on getting the car back in order mechanically, however the car still has the aftermarket track components which would have been the next stage of refresh if the second owner kept it.

Third (current owner) has had the car since June 2017, and bought it as an investment. The car looks to have only been driven ~500 miles since his purchase. This owner is said to be a collector, however in August 2018 decided to list the car for sale (via consignment) at Allen Motors. The person at Allen Motors I spoke to said the car sits in the show room is occasionally driven by the owner when he stops in to check on the car, or otherwise the car is only driven when it there is a need to move it out of the way of other cars in the showroom.

Ultimately, I passed on the car based on what I learned about the suspension components. I’m not planning much track time, mostly spirited mountain driving and I did not want to have to worry about switching out the suspension components upon purchase. The dealer/owner would not go below the $140k sale price in consideration of the cost to switch back OEM suspension components.

With that said I’m still on the search for a 997.2 GT3 RS in the ~$140K range if anyone is in the position of thinking of selling.
