Porsche ended supplying the black plastic key (which is, BTW, fully functional) with MY08. Prior to that they were ALWAYS delivered with the car, and the regular two keys. The black plastic key contains the appropriate chip in the head of it to open the locks and start the engine. If you took delivery (new) from a dealer prior to MY08 and didn't get that key, someone has some answering to do. I keep mine with my cell phone all the time,--so that I am always covered with a 'spare.'

Since no key was left with the casino (self park) then someone has some explaining to do at the dealership where the car was purchased,--to account for the valet key. Do we know for certain that the valet key was used to operate the car?
They mentioned last evening on KNBC that there is a climb in the rate of vehicular arson,--due to the economy. Up 31%.
To those of you who are buying used cars, it's more important than ever to have all the keys provided at the time of the sale.

Either the car was tracked or its fraud. Someone who knows you or is close to you somehow must have obtained a key somehow, and you were followed.
Or the other alternative is fraud. I dont know you so I cant judge but im sorry for your loss.

Fascinating thread...definitely one of a kind experience. I do have one question though...If plastic valet keys are car specific, how does a convicted arsonist in Vegas wind up with one that's visiting from LA? And knows exactly where it is? Either he is a master 25 year old car thief with ESP/FOS about the key or somebody who knew where the OP was going to specifically be was involved.
Maybe he was using a disposable cell phone as a tracking device mounted to the vehicle? An awfully elaborate system for night full of torching kicks. Maybe just a disgruntled hack who figured out how to circumvent the security system..burning Porsches to confuse the police...sounds like a waste of talent. I would be counting cards..
