Finally tracked down the make/model of what the guy I bought the car from said was a built-in radar detector. It appears that it's an older Antilaser G8 'laser parking sensor' (i.e. laser jammer). https://1stradardetectors.com/antila...-laser-jammer/
Now to tear into the console and figure out how to adjust the volume on this thing, as it's annoying as all hell.
Really looking forward to getting it (tomorrow morning.) I'll post a couple of photos of it.
Def give us your impressions of it after having it a while. I’m curious of all the talk about these air cooled cars. I went from a Boxster to the 997 and thought it was a huge improvement in power which I felt lacked in the Boxster even though the Boxster’s balance was so good. I wonder how you will react to the huge change in performance between the 997 and the Targa, and if you feel it was worth the swap. Kinda wish you had the 997 in manual to give a more direct comparison, but still curious. Have you ever driven a 3.2 before buying the Targa?

This was a very studied deliberate decision. And a lot of introspection. My neighbor has a 2018 Turbo S and also an '87 3.2 Carrera Targa. He loves both. I've driven his '87, and spent time with him in it. The car is just amazing. His has 120k miles and is solid as a rock. He's had it for 20 years. Never a problem with it. Nothing. Never on a battery maintainer. Never fails to start on first try.
Everything about it is just a work of engineering art. VDO gauges that actually indicate valid real functions. No artificial "piped in" or synthetically created engine or mechanical sounds.
Everything about the car is real.
It is not at all for me about speed / power / or relative performance as compared with a 997. It's 100% about a connected unfiltered driving experience. The sound and character of an air-cooled Porsche flat 6 is without comparison to anything else I have ever experienced. Porsche built these early 911's in such an uncompromised way - at the time the thrust of the company was being charted and guided by engineers (not marketers or accountants.) Anyway, I could go on and on about it...
Swung by my friend's shop after work to install my Bilstein B12 kit to complete the suspension refresh on my car. Need to put some miles on but so far, it feels really good. Still supple over the streets of SF but the new spring rates on the pro-kit springs makes the car feel much more responsive. Also helps that Bilstein dampers are pretty stiff due to their high gas pressures but it's not as bad as I've experienced from their passive dampers.
Going to wash the car tomorrow and take some better photos. The car should settle some more as I just drove around the block after the install and did a quick alignment. Need to swing back around to do a proper alignment after things settle.

That’s awesome. Looking forward to hearing more about it in your journey with it. I will have to spend some time checking it out as I have a friend who had one as well. I never paid much attention to it before when I saw him bring it by our gatherings.
I started what I can only call “electronic archeology” today. The ‘06 C4S cab I bought in August has a ton of retrofits:
An RF modulator with a 1/8” input
Tooki Bluetooth for phone only
A laser jammer (I think it’s an AntiLaser G8)
Wiring, audio control, and the custom display in the rear view mirror for a Valentine 1
I picked up a Mr12v Bluetooth unit, so I can stream music from my phone to the PCM (the RF modulator’s quality is pretty bad), so I have to strip out a lot of the old stuff.
Some of the install is pretty professional (modules wrapped in sound deadening material, nicely positioned, other parts just awful
I also discovered that only one of the two parking brake cables is in the harness, so it’s only been braking with one wheel. By the looks of things it’s been that way for 10 years or more.
Lots to do, but also a good opportunity to clean everything really good before it goes back in.
