I can attest to an X50 (K24s) with a stock Kline 2 1/2 exhaust drones a lot. I put resonators on it and it helped a little but was still un-bearable for a long range commuter. i switch back to a stock exhaust. Even that drones a little.
For those who want something between the Europipe Quiet version and the higher dB exhausts talked about here, I suggest looking for a used Europipe Stage 2 Loud.
The last car I bought has a europipe, and since I drive it often I'm going to switch it out for a stock exhaust as I like quiet. Is there any way to tell which version of Europipe I have based on the serial number or other "tells?"

Email Stef at Europipe the number on it and he'll tell you what it is

Does anyone know if upgrading turbos to XR1000s from the k16s increases drone?

It does make the car louder. Whether it drones or not, too subjective to say. Larger turbine housings/freer flowing turbine wheels let more exhaust mass pass through so the volume goes up and the pitch changes slightly compared to K16s.
you might be disppointed in effort going back to stock

Inside there is little if any change, outside not much more at all 2-4 db maybe.
I don't know Stefan makes a stage II anymore, only one when I bought mine.
it was not cheap, but quality of manufacturer and follow up was something I feel that was fully worth it.
For the top hat change, did you pop the axles out of the front diff, remove the upper nuts on the old spring hat, swing it outside the fender and swap them out? Or ?? I need to do this soon....
