Perhaps you misread my post...my point exactly. If you DO drive in rain and snow then removing the cosmoline is a BAD idea...

I thought the entire point of the cosmoline(sp?) coating was as a protective sealant against moisture and corrosive road elements.

I wouldn't remove it but agree it does look nicer without it.

Yep - and cosmoline was free to boot. Maybe a PO had it cleaned off which necessitates occasional blasting of crud. Otherwise it's counter to what you should do plus it costs a lot of $$.

Lot of people don t like the cosmoline including my tech. His concern is that it collects a lot of dirt and grime and also salt and makes it very difficult to get it off. I prefer to have a clean underbody which I can easily clean during the winter without having all the crap stuck to the cosmoline. I recently had a look at a bunch of rusty undercarriage parts with the cosmoline on. Not sure it helps much. However, i m sure there are lots of people who disagree with me. Each to his own.

Do you have any pics of the clean undercarriage? I've seen some cars with a brownish layer on the engine bottom, is that the dirty cosmoline?

Porsche and Porsche dealers are offering this service in Germany. There's an article in pedrosgarage about it published in the Dec 2011 issue of Die Porsche Kassette which confirms the above. The fellow who did my car found out about it when he visited a Porsche dealer in Germany. By the way, this fellow is a very respected Porsche mechanic in my region.

Like I said, some people will disagree with me but Porsche is not on this list.

So a dealer offering a service indicates what PAG's opinion is on cosmoline?

Why do you think PAG goes to the trouble of applying cosmoline on exposed metal on the underside of the car??

For the same reason they put it on guns. As a shipping preservative.

Do you really think that German Porsche dealers are offering a service that Porsche does not approve? If you do, fine, but I don t.

I have nothing further to say on this. If you don t like it, don t do it.

My last word.

The cosmoline is meant to preserve the guns against rust and corrosion. It is removed before use and the guns are cleaned regularly by their owners hopefully.

On the Porsche, it is put on for the same reason. It can either be left on if one wishes, or it can be removed by those owners that don t want that gunk on their cars and are prepared to clean the undersides regularly. This is much easier without the gunk on it.

But of course.

Because of the very tight tolerances between the gun's moving parts; not a factor on the underside of a 996 Turbo.

The newer GT3s, GT2s and Turbos with Mezger engines are not coated in Cosmoline. So it seems Porsche itself has changed its mind about its usefulness.
