I totally agree with buying the used transmission as I have basically never heard of one of these failing.

A transmission shop should be able to troubleshoot fix this, if they know what they are doing. However, because not many fail, they won't be familiar with it. It will come back to you with problems after the rebuild. And then you'll have to bring it to them again and it still won't be fixed the second time.

Cut your loses, buy the used transmission, and have a transmission shop install it....that should be about $500-800, they could take it out and put it back in within 3 hours I imagine....maybe even two if they have never seen the car before.

+996. as already pointed out several times, the Mercedes tranny enjoys a solid rep as being "bulletproof". or you can continue TRUSTING this shop/mechanic who has done nothing but fail to meet promised deadlines or give you empty promises.

As kromdom says, it's a very robust transmission. I have heard failures like you described in mercedes.

From what mercedes people are saying, there are 2 possibilities. Conductor plate/hydro electric system or torque converter failure due to ATF water contamination (oil to coolant heat exchanger failure).

This transmission is known for conductor plate issue. There are cases of people loses drive and reverse when the conductor plate shorted out.
Typically issue started with connector seal started to leak, owner ignores it as leak is not significant (and looks like trans pan seal seep) and letting oil into the electrical connection and shorted the electrical system. When this thing happens, you need a new conductor plate and also the transmission/body control module.

There is a shop in NJ who can build this transmission to the next level with reasonable cost:

Here is an update for the hungry audience. I spoke to KK on the phone earlier today, we are working on arranging the shipping. To make this fair and transparent I am not taking any money upfront; once he installs the transmission and car is fully working and drives I will take the $$$.

Damn that is pretty stand up but will you also agree to a payment plan after he installs it and if he asks about it?

I can assure you there will be no requests for a payment plan. Lol.

There will however be an obligatory shirtless picture with my 911 and famous transmission.

A single shirtless picture is not acceptable. If you decide to go that route, there will need to be uncomfortably shirtless photos in no less than five locations around the world. I encourage you to rethink taking the red pill and heading down the Kalashnikov rabbit hole...the blue pill is where it's at.

What a nice gesture by Kalashnikov - Don't see that happen every day and says a lot about his integrity!
