Help! My 996 cab just broke down in an intersection
I've got AAA coming to tow her back to the dealer.
Any ideas? 2002 996 Tip C2 Cab. Had entire engine replaced after IMSB failure around 22k on the odometer before I purchased it. I pulled up to the intersection and when the light went green the car lurched foward and that was it. I tried putting it in park and back in drive and nothing. Car starts fine, just a no go with the teams. Some nice officers helped push me into a gas station so here I await for AAA.
It's gotta be something with transmission right?

Yes, sounds like something blew up in the transmission. Good luck with the diagnosis.
I'd much rather have a 996 with a healthy engine and a busted transmission than the opposite...
I wonder if you broke a halfshaft or something. Does it rev but just not go anywhere? Does it make any new noises?

I hope it's just a half shaft.

Sorry to hear. Usually when a half shaft breaks you'll hear some clunking or ZzzzzZZZZzzzz-ing as the splines grind themselves to dust. It could be, but more likely it's in the valve body, if you don't have any grindy noises.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, that there'd likely be some flopping or at least the sound of a shaft running twice as fast as normal. Hopefully an inexpensive fix...

I didn't take notice of any fluids at the intersection since I was in heavy traffic, but as the car sat at the gas station underneath the car was bone dry.
With these car's transmissions, does the fix normally entail an entire new trans or is there some hope for a non-$5000 plus fix?

I hope it's something simple like that. Definitely annoying they are charging me a diagnosis fee for a car that still has 30 day tags. I guess that's what come with buying AS IS.

~22k tip tranny failures are fairly rare on the mk2 models. Wonder if PO might've abused it with neutral drops and brake torquing...
It will be interesting to see what the diagnosis says.

is your car being towed to the same dealer you bought it from? hope they do not give you any grief about the intake mod you just did.....which most likely has NOTHING to do with your current problem.

Well the engine was replaced at 22k. The car now has 50k on it when I purchased it a few weeks ago. I've certainly never neutral dropped it but I do drive the car hard as I understand these cars are meant to be. I have no idea about the previous owner.
