It might make more sense to find out what is really wrong with the car before talking to the dealer. As in the earliest posts in this thread, maybe it really is something minor after all.

Macster: Doesn't sound like a blown transmission, nor a failed half-shaft.

Reads more like something electrical with the transmission. Could be something like a bad solenoid.
Maybe Macster was right after all.

Does it say on the bill of sale as-is and/or no warranty?

So the indie said after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting, the car is now stuck in reverse for reverse and also neutral.

His friend he's been working with said that means the clutches are fused and will have to be rebuilt.

Does that sound like bull**** to you guys?

I think a BUNCH OF PEOPLE have been trying to tell you NOT TO TRUST this mechanic and haul your car far away from him ASAP for the past few WEEKS now.

No, half of you have been saying that and the other half have been saying to leave it there and let him make it right.

I've been watching this train wreck. Now seems like a good time to tell your shop that you don't really care what they think is wrong with it, you just want it fixed on their dime since you supplied them with a fully functional transmission....and now it isn't.

This is crazy. You need to either troubleshoot it yourself or bring it to somebody who can. This guy is crazy. It's an automatic transmission, they are easy.

This guy is incapable of 'making it right'. That was known back on page 3 or 4 maybe. What a CF.

I bet this is an electrical issue. More than one solenoid on at the same time or something like that. If the drums are fused, the transmission would be locked up even when the engine is off and the battery disconnected. Is this happening?

Since the shop didn't supply the transmission, they are not responsible if something brakes. You need to find out exactly what is going on as this shop seems to just guess.

This exactly. It sucks but that's the way it is. And there is no way I can prove that the used transmission was fully functional to begin with anyhow.

I'm really thinking it is something electrical. When he disconnected the battery something changed. I don't see why that would happen if it was mechanical.

I'm going to get the car out of there and to this place called GT Performance in Raleigh who actually work on Porsches.

I'm really sorry you are going through this. Since this is apparently not simply an adjustment, getting your car, and your old transmission, out of there as quickly as possible seems like an extremely good idea. One of the keys to owning any older exotic car is to find one, or more, shops that you trust and that know your particular marque very well. Most indies specialize and therefore they know the tricks, they have the manuals, they have the specialist tools, they know the other specialists and they know the suppliers; all vital information.

At this point don't worry about who is responsible for what or who can point their fingers at who else, get your car fixed. It is very doubtful that the new tranny is trashed, it is possible your old tranny isn't trashed. After you have the car fixed by someone competent is the time to worry about culpability. Right now you are at the mercy of others. Take control and next time a shop says, his buddy has the tool he needs, get out. If he doesn't own the tool he doesn't belong working on your car; ever.

If he really took apart some of the rear suspension, don't forget to get the Porsche indie to double check that work as well.

I would also talk to GT Performance and see if you can arrange to pay to have one of their guys go to the shop with you to load the car, and tranny, for transport. No sense letting some bozo muck it up worse by loading it incorrectly or leaving behind some vital part. You need expert help now to stop the bleeding.

Sorry to hear. This is a complete disaster. I hope it's something simple.

Have you talked to the dealer again? You should talk to the manager and explain what happened. If you don't get a good response I'd go by and take some photos of the cars in the lot without the required notice, and talk to an attorney. The technicality won't mean anything coming from you, but might carry some weight from an attorney. An assertive letter with a lawyer's letterhead can work wonders.
