The new shop only works on higher end cars and exotics. They are certified Porsche mechanics. This other guy is just some indie who led me to believe this was be an easy breezy rebuild initially.
Doesn't matter what the new shop works on. Just because the have high end cars doesn't mean they know the 996 automatic transmissions. Have you asked them for references? Considering how bad things are right now, I would make absolutely sure the next shop is as good as they look. If you can't go, send your girlfriend or someone else to take pictures of the transmission pan. Heck, hire an Uber driver to go take the pics. Do whatever it takes so you don't have to rely on shops telling you what happened.

Just curious, did you get your original transmission and any removed parts from the last mechanic?

I haven't gotten them myself, but they are being brought to the new guy.

And as I mentioned, I have posted to PCA and I'm awaiting replays and recommendations.

Is he sending a money order for $1,800 + 20% contingency (for any damage to Kalash's transmission) seeing how he didn't fulfill his end of the service agreement.

Unfortunately since I did the supplying of parts there was jack guaranteed

Though if he lied about actually looking at my transmission I could potentially at least get back the "tear down" fee

I think "tore up fee" would be a more appropriate term for this guy's services.

The shop installed the supplied transmission so he DID fulfill his end of that service agreement.

This is like the old serial comics. I find myself checking once or twice a day for the updates. Best of Luck with the new guy

Really? It's my understanding that this person told KK that he would be able to fully repair KK's car in the beginning. (Not sure if KK got it in writing, but judging from this person's poor mechanical methodologies and business practices, I would presume that he probably did NOT provide any type of written estimate or repair contract) Anyway, the mechanic diagnosed the problem by removing the 1st transmission, supposedly evaluating it, and told KK that it would need a full transmission replacement to get the car functioning properly. KK then provided a working transmission (based on Kalash's word) and the shop agreed to install and setup the transmission only to have it respond in "limp mode" like the other tranny. Leads one to believe this guy doesn't know what he's doing. He blames it on a locked down clutch. But many believe that it could very well be an electronic issue since these transmissions are considered bullet proof. But the guy gladly kept KK's money even though he could NOT fulfill his original agreement. We'll see what the next shop says. What you wanna bet both transmissions are good? ha!

At this point, I really hope they are both good. Then, I could at least have a spare or sell the original to recoup some funds

Some of you seem to be operating under the assumption that your mechanic is required to fix whatever is wrong for whatever estimate is made up-front. While OP has been jacked around six ways from go - which DOES suck, no question about it - mechanics aren't psychics. Nothing sucks worse than having to pay a wrench to fix the wrong part - but that's how it goes sometimes. What happens afterward varies - my Corvette whisperer would probably feel like crap, would go find the right part in his warehouse of Corvette stuff, and install it for free because he's the kind of guy who would rather lose a few bucks than have a customer lose confidence in him - but there are fewer and fewer of those, and more and more of the "It's $200 an hour, minimum one hour in one-hour increments, and I only do what the computer tells me to do" places...

Proceeding with the install of the 2nd gearbox with a mechanic in which OP had little faith was probably not the best choice...the new transmission went in and it still didn't work, so the part is going to be blamed. Mechanic is going to point at the part, owner is going to point at the mechanic, butts get hurt, and it all gets crappy.

Showing here.

OP, I hope you finally get some good news...
