Mike,
Dude, if you get a 997 it better be a 997.2. Shares the same engine. I would go the 996tt or aircooled route if I were you.
Sucks about yesterday bro. So sorry I didn't turn around to look for you. Never would've thought you had blown your engine.
P.s. I have dibs on you wheels... too soon?

Sorry to read about your car's trouble. Chunks of alum. on the ground along with engine oil suggest the engine's pretty sick maybe even terminal. I hope I'm wrong.
But let the tech check the engine out. Don't rush into things, make rash decisions.
Don't know if the price is below market, but there's a nice looking red 2006 997 just went up for sale. The seller posted some info in the 997 section.

Up to you of course, but if the car's engine is beyond repair there's always a used engine.

FWIW, the PO of my car had to replace the engine because he drove over a chunk of semi-truck tire tread on the highway. It flipped up and broke the oil filter housing starving the engine of oil and trashing it. Good news is that his insurance paid to replace the engine. Hope it is something like that for you.
Hey, I've got a sweet guards red 928S4 that is just getting finished with a TB/WP plus about 1,000 WYAIT items that I'm ready to sell cheap. (I really hope the 928 ownership experience involves actually getting to drive the damn thing at some point)
Oh, and the good news, you might want to subscribe to this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-na-to-tt.html
One last thing (and karma will probably come back and bite me in the *** for making this statement), this is exactly why I buy high-mileage cars for 60% of what a low-mileage example sells for. If I lose an engine, oh well, I saved it on the purchase price so I end up with a new engine for what I would have paid for a lower mileage car in the first place. So far (and this is where I'm pushing karma's buttons), I've never had to replace an engine or transmission on a higher mileage car.

Surprised Jake hasn't chimed in yet with advice and knowledge.

I was hoping it was the filter housing as well - your first photo cuts off just before the housing would have been visible.
It would be AWESOME if the "bang" was just the filter housing, and the engine stopped because you stalled it due to being freaked out by the bang. I'll keep up the "half full" routine until you have a diagnosis.

Well, good thing there wasn't a major fire! Or a car spun out behind you during the driving event.

I hope it is not an engine failure. However,,if it is, there are options. I know because I had an engine failure on my '01 996 in July of 2013 while at a DE. Root cause of my failure (spun rod and main bearing) was a failed water pump that led to rapid coolant temperature rise.
I had the car towed to my dealer and they were able to provide me with 3 options. First was a remanufactured engine from Porsche for about $24K all in. Second was a rebuilt engine (third party) with an LN IMS upgrade for about $17K all in. Third was a used engine with an LN IMS upgrade for about $12K all in. I could not justify putting that much money in a car worth $20K so I ended up selling it to another Rennlister as is so he could convert into a track car. I posted the car on Rennlist and within 4 hours I had 4 offers to purchase.
I ended up getting a 2010 997.2S about a month later.
