As far as your thoughts, if the car is a goner take the plates off and transfer them to the 914. Drive it while you search for a suitable replacement. When you find the right car you buy it and then decide if you want to keep the 914 or sell it. On the plus side the 914's value won't go down even with a couple thousand miles added to it. The registration fees can be recovered fortunately.

Mike, keep in mind that your insurance will cover your repairs if you did hit something ... just saying.
A few years back my wife hit an object in the road with the transmission pan and she was covered.

There was only an inch or less transition from the road edge to the pavement, so I really don't think I hit anything. There was a spot on the run where many (most?) were bottoming out, but I don't think I hit it (I'm pretty sure it was in a place in the road after I broke down).
Any chance I can fix the engine case with a Gorilla Glue and sawdust paste?
As others have noticed, the oil leak is forward of the oil pan. Also, probably only a few quarts total have leaked out, as far as I can guesstimate. That means whatever blew out is higher than the oil sump.
Of course, I will keep you all posted with the developments, and I greatly appreciate all the kind words. I'm trying to stay positive, although the rational part of me is telling me that the car is toast.

^^^ Yes, very good point. Also, the pavement may have been more uneven than I recall. And, I had to pull off to the side because the guy in front of me stopped short. Some big rocks, and generally unsafe conditions that the city and county should have been maintaining better.

Everyone's already said the sorry stuff. It's awful but not sure why you think your car is now just a roller. If you like it and have put money into making "your" car, isn't a new motor or rebuild worth it. The car will then be stronger than any used car you buy and it will be a motor with things just the way you would want them. Just my 2 cents.

Well, until I hear what the shop has to say, I haven't written the car off. Just mentally preparing.
But, I can't see spending 25,000 to put a new motor into a 20,000 car, no matter how much it's been personalized. Also, that fee would have to be paid in a lump sum, as opposed to spreading out car payments. I don't want to drop that much cash in a lump sum right now, due to some other expenses (including, as mentioned above, getting a car for daughter).
Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted, and will solicit opinions as things progress.
Then, as usual, I will probably ignore all the opinions and do what I want.

OUCH! That is not how you wanted to spend the day with your car I am sure. Scary for me, a potential new owner. The car appears to have been well serviced, driven properly and you get metal chunks and an oil slick as a reward, bummer.
It will be interesting to hear the diagnosis and plan of action. It does sound like a decent excuse to move into a 997 though

Hopefully it's rebuildable. Doesn't make sense to throw a new motor in for the cost they are going for but I don't see any benefit to not doing it. Getting a 997 and you could be in the same boat a lot earlier then having a new engine in your 996.
