So Watkins bites me in the a$$ again. Turns out i snapped an axle shaft and thats why the bearing came apart. Not sure how or why but its a common issue in the gt3 cars. Although not as expensive as a motor the new upgraded Driveshaft Shop shafts from Demonspeed at $3300 r significantly more then the $90 bearing i was planning to spend. Also the race on the spindle had spun but thet r the same as my old c2 stuff so i was able to "borrow" parts. Its amazing that a 200k mile part can br that much better then an 80k part.

Yeh, its funny when life knows u have a couple extra dollars in your pocket it seems to take it back.

Coming from an offroad race world there is no i would go back with the same level of part after a failure. It just cost more down the road. Worst part is i was sponsored by Driveshaft Shop back in the day but being out of racing for15yrs wont help me get a discount. Its also good to support these specialty race guys as their products advance the sport.

Figured that much and the guys at Demon seem to be helpful.

Well i guess we will see whats going back in the car. Demon sold their last set last weekend and is checking with dss for availability. I can get a porsche turbo "black" shaft by fri for $850. They r stronger then standard but im pretty sure its what i had in the car as the gt3 pet show it has the same part number as the turbo

DeJeeper, sorry to see man. Good luck with the final solution. I was surprised when I found out that I had to have my Guard LSD rebuilt last month. But as my indy told me, eventually even metal fails. It will be good to see your next steps.

I'd change the hub too. Can you get an outer CV & rebuild the half shaft?
Pwdrhound has broken quite a few driveshafts. I don't know what he's using now. Probably a Porsche Motorsport part.

I think im just gonna get a stock shaft for now. Maybe upgrade in the winter. Looking at how the shaft is made there is a huge stress consentration at that point. At 350ft/lbs of tension when the bearing went bad (obviously has been bad for a long time). It must side load the shaft because of misalignment and then a crack forms. At least thats my theory for making myself feel better for not spending money i dont have .

Do you have an approximate mileage on that failed component?

The donor had 85k on it all else is unknown other then it was a VA car that was wrecked 3-4yrs before i bought it. I did have about 20 track days in it too.

The pass side bearing was replaced at some point because the retainer plate was oriented wrong but it still looked dryish. At least the spindle was fine.

Pass side:

Well passenger side is back together. This is how u torque a 340ft-lb axle shaft nut by yourself. U cut the center out if an old rotor, weld on a tube. I made mine a slip fit so it will work on the ground or the lift. Attach with lug bolts or nuts and crank away with a large torqe wrench.

I tightened it as much as I could on the lift, put the wheel back on minus center cap, and put the car on the ground. Set the parking brake and torqued away.

That is the other way. I could not do it that way because the drivers side is not put back together. Plus ill need the tool for the front.

The front will have to wait until to next week as i ordered the wrong bearings

This is how I do it. 3/4" drive socket and extension. Jack stand for support. 3/4" drive torque cube set for 460nm. 3/4" T slide with a 5 foot black iron pipe. Easy.
