Ran into a no start situation, it eventually threw a P0355 code for crank position sensor. Verified all the wiring as it ran perfectly fine when I took it apart. Wiring checked out but the sensor gave some funky readings. New CPS delivered today and installed......It fired up instantly. Kind of surprised that the sensor completely died like that but glad it did while up in the air.

Car finally moved under its own power! Only forward and reverse a couple of feet as it's still on the lift. But everything felt like I expected it to and no weird noises/feelings. Starts in gear with the clutch pressed and shifts through all the gears while running. No leaks and the clutch pedal feels solid (I left the helper spring out).

PIWIS interface comes in Wednesday, not sure I'll be able to get much else done before my daddy/daughter excursion this weekend but its getting close.
Just programming, tidy up the wiring, install the metal coolant lines around the transmission, fill coolant, and put the seat and interior panels back in.

Been looking for a nice manual steering wheel but I may just keep the Tiptronic one. See who notices...?

I actually drove it off the lift and out of the garage under its own power today! Just went down the driveway and then backed it up, I need to finish adding and bleeding the coolant before its goes anywhere. The e30 is back up on the lift, with the 996 on the ground. I have a very short list of things left to do now but the biggest is finish the programming. At least its mechanically complete.

All the Tiptronic parts that were pulled/swapped out. The harness and TCU are still in the car.

Few pics of the PIWIS tester clone I picked up. Works fine, I just need to learn how to use it properly and not brick my DME

So close......

How much did that PIWIS clone cost you? It looks like the real deal, just the unlicensed ( illegal by Porsche and ethical standards ) .. Did it come it a laptop of hard drive?

It was a couple of hundred. I was back and forth about it but since I own Durametric and icarsoft as well, I've already committed the crime I guess....?

I used an old WIN7 laptop we had in the attic and loaded the PIWIS software via a WINXP virtual machine. I got all of the instructions and software download to do that part off this forum. It worked well so I bit the bullet and bought the PIWIS interface clone. Just trying to figure out my way around it so I don't screw anything up. Makes me a bit nervous, to be honest.

A local Porsche dealer did give me the codes for my car though.

I started a new thread for more tiptronic to manual swap stuff https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ith-a9635.html

I've also got an RSS underdrive pulley (thanks @TexSquirrel ) that I need to install. Eventually swap the tiptronic steering wheel out for a manual one.

Not sure what my next project will be for the car? Maybe red seat belts? Respray the front bumper or even wrap the whole car?

Still poncing about with the PIWIS. I have the Tiptronic emergency run message still. I'm going to put the TCU back in and see if that does anything. I'm reading that I may need to swap the cluster for a manual one but then also reading that the clusters are exactly the same, except for the Tiptronic gauge face. Model to model of course.

Once in the DME, I realized that it was replaced back in 2006 and is showing the car as an 2004 Carrera 4 cabriolet (different VIN as well). My local Porsche dealer has been super helpful with things to try and gave me all of the codes for both the DME in my can and my cars VIN.

Long story short; still have the red tiptronic error message, still learning PIWIS, and still looking for help.....

Plug in the Tiptronic switch that's in the console if you still have it.

If you don't have it I can check which pins to jump on the connector to simulate the Tip gear lever being in P or N. That ought to shut it up. I probably can't check until next week though.

The instrument clusters have the same PCB, the software on the Tip vs. manual is different. So I have been told, anyway. You may be able to reflash the cluster through piwis if you can figure out how.

I had that switch in the console still, was in Park. I moved it into N (watched it change in PIWIS) to see if it would do anything different but no luck.

I plugged the TCU back in and no longer getting the instrument cluster error but the dme is getting a tiptronic timeout error now. P0600 CAN Tiptronic (no signal). I'll research this but in the meantime I have disconnected the battery in desperation. I may just need to take it in or at least hire someone who could walk me through it.

been fiddling with my PIWIS 2 and a friends PIWIS 1.

I'm now down to one code: 9112 (TIPTRONIC CONTROL UNIT), and it appears to be stored in the instrument cluster. For some reason, the VIN is showing up with a different number in the instrument cluster and I haven't been able to change it (yet).

I used the PIWIS 1 to delete all of the Tiptronic related options and added 480 for the 6 speed, that seemed to be the ticket to fix the DME.

Seems like you're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Its a flicker light, from an old gas lantern ugh!!!

Chipping away at the instrument cluster. I've updated the VIN number in it now but still can't do anything about removing the tiptronic signal the cluster is STILL looking for.

Almost at the point where I'm going to look for a used manual .2 C4S cluster. Probably a waste of $.
