it's really bad for an engine to open the throttle while at low rpms. if you don't give it gas it's not a big deal. on my dirt bike i lug my engine in corners and you can feel through the throttle cable and hear where the engine starts to lug. just have to reduce throttle a bit till you get to higher rpm.
I don't roll away in 2nd. I use first gear. But when coming to a stop I don't downshift into first, i downshift usually to 3rd or 2nd and then neutral.
I daily drove a mint 1982 (10k miles) bought it in 1990. Daily for 5 years. One of the best of all time, bulletproof....and I can still hear her say, your lights are on

The G50 and 915 liked to eat first great synchros over time if you didn’t double clutch or rev match. No matter the car, even our old Scion Xb, I don’t shift down to first. Too risky and bad technique. So maybe the dude is just a crappy driver, and hasn’t damaged synchros. These G96 transmissions are pretty stout.
I haven't damaged a G96 -or any other gearbox, however I have purchased a Boxster S and a 996 with bad synchros (996 2nd gear, 986 3rd) in the 2000s. It would seem either they are not as tough as some other gearboxes (e36/e46), or the owners don't know how to drive them quite right.
I seldom downshift into 1st, but always double clutch any significant downshift. In the case of shifting into 1st, shooting the RPMs up pretty high
Putting the trans into 1st gear, like any other gear, depends on if the transmission was designed for it or it likes it. My 49 Chevy did not have a synchro for 1st, so you had to stop. Otherwise, the 911 trans was designed for it, it has the synchro for it, and I even think reverse might have a synchro as well. But it should be done at the right speed, and it shouldn’t be forced or slammed. This goes for any gear, it’s just that 1st has more force on the synchros than the others to get the trans gears moving faster. At 5mph, once warmed up, it’s no problem in my 99 996.
The bottom of the 996 market has risen even more dramatically than the top

It seems like it! Mine was listed for 21k but I offered him 18k after a PPI and as I recall we met at $18.5k so I was a little off. Still, in 15 years of buying and selling cars, I don't think I can look back on much and say wow that seems like a killer deal now.
