The 133,333 mile engine rebuild thread

"Why they used lefthanded threads is a mystery. There is no logical reason for this. The very fact that they also made these with righthanded threads bears this out."
Cynical person that I am, I can only think it was so they could sell "special tools"...

I can tell the history of the left hand threads, but the logistics of the inconsistency is arguable.
The original design engineers of the m96 used a color to identify bank 1 and bank 2 cam actuators since they were very similar looking and would physically fit either side.
Bank 1 had a black solenoid and used right hand threaded special tool 9632 also in black to relieve tension.
Bank 2 had a grey/silver solenoid and used a left handed thread special tool 9632/1 in grey/silver to relieve tension.
Later engineers/bean counters stopped that practice and would use what ever were available, hence if you ordered a black bank 1 solenoid, you may get a grey/silver solenoid in the box.
Actuators bank 1 or bank 2 differential must be done by the actual part number on the actuator, and it may be left or right handed threads.

Thanks for the clarification though... we all know what the real reason is

Not much to update. The weather was nice and I spent all day working in the yard/ garden/ greenhouse. But I did start on correcting a wiring issue. There were two cuts in the insulation of each wire to the #6 coil pack. Put some liquid electrical tape on each one. This will be a much better repair from what was there.
Here's a shot of the coffee percolator. I think that's what it is...
Now for something completely different. Green stuff...

That painters tape might be an air flow restrictor...

A few years ago I was waiting for some BMW parts shipped Priority from Chicago to San Diego and it turned into a car parts World Tour. The package made it to Los Angeles in five days but then was sent to Michigan and then Pennsylvania. After this tracking screen cap, it went to Nevada and somewhere else before finally getting to San Diego. Almost 8000 miles total.

Yes - it might.
Still need to install the oil fill pipe and AOS pipe. Both are due this week. Then I can move forward. I'll admit, I've underestimated my progress on some occasions and delayed ordering some parts. Then again, some things have been delayed beyond normal expectations. Then there's a lack of planning...

lol. I think 90% of the time USPS does a great job but it seems like it's always the package you REALLY need that has problems. It's never the order of pink plastic lawn flamingos.

So I'm at the ticket counter for my flight to LA. I ask the girl at the desk if I can have my luggage sent to Atlanta and then after three days, have it sent to Dallas.
She apologizes and exclaims; "I'm sorry sir, we can't do that"
Me: "Why not? That's what you did the last time I took this flight".

A package arrived from Sunset. LF inner fender liner, a couple of lower ducts and two engine items.
Wanted to get the new oil fill pipe installed so I can put the alternator on. I remember screwing around with that when I replaced the alternator for my 125,000 mile tune up. Too many install, remove, install cycles. Kind of wanted to do it just once, this time around. Call me crazy. The other item is the breather hose off the heat exchanger. Now I'm waiting for the AOS pipe to arrive and I can start messing with the wire harness.
