I flogged the **** out of my 986 today and look forward to doing so again tomorrow. My biggest takeaway today is that I want to upgrade my brakes - they seemed to get a bit mushy after 5 laps or so. I'll plan out new fluid, pads/rotors but probably need a track set and a street set going forward. I'm happy and confident with my tires so far - Continental SureContact whatevers have plenty of grip once I warm them up. The motor sends it... so i don't need more power for the time being. A suspension refresh is a distant consideration, but I want to stay stock given that this is my daily. (kinda rambling here).
I'll be interested to start logging oil temps once I get @Coopduc 's oil sensor installed.
What is my easiest overall data collection option for the car? I suspect it's just old enough to be kinda manual.
Happy to help with track goodies. Been doIng it for a few years now. I didnt bother to look but what region r u in?
Data collection for our cars suck because the ecu doesnt broadcast much. If u want to get real good real time track data get a Garmin Catalyst. If u actually want data get an Aim solo dl/2 with an expansion module. U can the put 4 sensors into the system. Oil pressure, oil temp, brake pressure and stearing angle would be my suggestion. U get water temp and throttle position from the ecu. Add their camera for cool integrated vidoes.
For brakes get a good fluid in there, srf, motul 600, endless 650, pagid r all.good choices. Get a decent track pad like ferodo 3.12 or pagid yellows and u will be going deep into a corner with confidence.
Thanks - that is all very helpful. I think I've got the itch.... I'm in the maverick PCA group and lone star BMW CCA (although they won't let me run my boxster at their events). This weekend's event was with APEX and I was very impressed with how they ran it. Great vibe. We rented an RV and stayed at the track - which meant that in the evenings it became a tailgate. What a great time.
I did 2 sessions this morning, then packed the car and drove it ~240 miles home. Gonna drive it to work in the morning. What a car!!
Here's me and my instructor from the weekend - I should get all the track photos tomorrow:
My wife and I drove our 996 Cab from Denver to Page, AZ. We are on the way to Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca raceway. This is the car with the 4.0 STage II+ M9Experience engine.
Car has run perfectly and is averaging 28.3 mpg. It has run flawlessly and oil and coolant temps are staying at 180-190 degrees. This motor is a torque MONSTER. Leaving home Fri Morning Arriving in Page Az this evening (2300 mi later)
Cleaned up the door sill on the passenger side (with the little storage pocket) and on the driver side. Both sides had the black rubber coating coming off in certain areas which didn't look appealing so I just removed the entire coating and it looks much better now.
I also cleaned out the garage and found my old Blendmount that I had in my GTI about 16 years ago. I was about to toss it until I test fitted it on the 996 and it worked perfectly, so now I have to break my old Escort Passport out and hardwire it to the 996.
After owning the CSR for almost 3yrs… I finally secured the fan cable assembly.
Oooof. sweet mod. If I could do one mod to my C2 it would be too lose the heavy power spoiler and swap in a carbon ducktail. But retirement is more important than a few lb haha. It's all good. More pics @TheChunkNorris please.

Man I congratulate your step into retirement… def not worth the extra weight loss.
I wrestled around on the ground under the engine with the oil pan removed and scoped the bores from the sump.
Cylinder #6
Cylinder #5
Cylinder #4 (I think)
I scoped cylinders 1 and 2, and I think there were similar markings to cylinder #4. I didn't bother with #3 after the hassle it took to get to #6 through the hole in the side of #5.
For context, I have a 99 C2 3.4L with 130k mi that has spent it's entire life in southern California. Two used oil analysis reports under my ownership have not shown any abnormal wear metals.
Does this look like the early stages of scoring?

On Tuesday, removed stock springs and replaced with H&R Sport Springs. Anticipated 5-6 hours with help of a good and knowledgeable friend. Took from 8:30 to about 6:00 with another hour of replacing wheels and interior panels/subwoofer.
Results: Finally test drove car today. Car is just a hair over one inch lower and nicer looking; and springs are noticeably firmer, not quite as stiff as my X73 Boxster S, so darn nice. Car now has a bit of mongrel suspension that I think will work together: Rennline strut brace courtesy of previous owner, newish Bilstein B4's (Yes, B6's or B8's would be preferable), Eibach Swaybars (Pelican Parts on sale), and H&R springs ($150 from a Porsche enthusiast). With the 18 inch wheels, I think the ride height and the position under the wheel arch are an improvement.
Just hit 70,000 miles with new OEM brake rotors and pads, new clutch, new AOS, and documented regular maintenance. Hoping for a long term relationship. I can afford to buy the upscale products and pay to have them installed, but I'm sort of trying to prove the practicality of a good 996 on a budget.

There is some, but that could have been there for 100k miles and may not get any worse for another 100k miles.
Getting ready to deploy next week so I’ve been cleaning up the garage. Had to renew registrations on both cars too, replaced the license plate holder on the 996.
