I was following the Pelican book to the letter and it was only after I supported the transmission and engine and removed the front mounts I noticed there is plenty of wiggle room to slip a long-wobbly extension up there.

Although the car was built in '99, my engine was replaced under warranty in '02. 996 community wisdom suggests that I should have a single row IMSB and indeed the flange looks like a single row style. But the RMS and bolts look like the pre-update variety and I will need to figure out where to buy the updated bolts. It was nice to see zero oil leaks although the clutch friction material dropping down on me while pulling the cover plate was a bit nasty. One advantage of covid-19 is that I have plenty of masks at home.

Not today, but two weekends ago was finishing the install of a Gentex mirror (includes auto dim, Homelink, and compass). I know, some of you will be moaning about this not being factory-correct, but it does "fit" the interior aesthetic and seems to make more sense than sticking an additional switch on the dash for the garage door opener (and my Homelink can work multiple garage doors).

This past weekend was lubricating the SAI pump. You can still hear it, but the sound is not nearly as loud now.

I like the use of the Homelink & compass equipped rear view mirrors. Seems a lot safer that a garage door opener on your sunvisor that can be grabbed along with your car registration with your address on it. I used Nissan Pathfinder homelink mirror off ebay ($40) which has orange text along with a pigtail harness and rear view mirror adaptor part. Pretty easy and cheap to do.

I have no problem with that...but a LOT of my car is not factory-correct!

Great idea! Hmmm...off to check eBay before Pathfinder mirrors jump in price.
...which year(s) Pathfinder should I be looking for?

If the price comes out the same, having two extensions to make ~30” would be more versatile.
15 2” extensions would suck though.

It was from a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. You can get a Gentex pigtail, cover (for wires), and mirror attachment adaptor pretty cheaply on thE bay.

Lots of manufacturers use the Gentex mirrors. You don’t need to get one from any specific car or auto brand. Mine was from a Subaru. You just need the pig tail to wire the mirror to your own car. Only takes two wires (positive and ground), so not really that hard to install. Let me know if you need advice...I learned somethings from my experience.

True that Gentex is used on many cars. The Subaru Gentex mirrors used a red LED for the compass. The Gentrx brand use a blur/green LED for the compass. The Nissans use an orange LED that aligns with the Porsche dash as shown in my pics.

I bought a used Gentex compass/self dimming mirror from an Audi because it uses the same windshield mount and wiring plug as a 996. The 996 harness is part # 996.612.964.00 and plugs directly into the plug on the Audi mirror. In May of 2018 it was $33.73 from Sonnen. The little window on the upper right is the compass.

My car was sleeping soundly in the garage to the hum of the battery tender while I was clearing 20" of snow.
