Unless it is proven that one of the cars started the fire.
Interesting point. Maybe, depending on the policy's wording. It also may be impossible to tell for sure. And even if a car started the fire, was it because someone left the ignition in the ON position or some other human error?
Now I may put my '21 992s Cab up for sale. I suspect prices of pre-owned Porsche just went up another 5 to 10% and they are now even more unobtainable.
John Clarke was one of the most gifted comedians ever to grace this planet, this short skit was one of many he and his partner Bryan Dawes did and this one is a parady of an Australian Senator's reaction after an oil tanker, literally, lost it's bow in a storm off the West Australian coast.
Forget about the cars, they're toast. Even if not burned to a crisp, too much smoke damage on anything not on fire, then how you going to get them off at sea. No, just like having your car stolen and wrecked, you don't want them back - you want a check. So does VW Group.
What they will do is try to get the oil off the boat - that's the most critical thing right now. Then either sink it in place or tow to a port to be cut off for metal scrap. Because of where it is located, it would be a long and expensive tow to somewhere for salvage.. The insurance company for all practical purposes owns the ship and cargo now, and its only about money at this point - would the cost of salvage and tow recover anything vs sink in place?
Here's my thought though. 1,100 Porsches and they are going to get remade as soon as possible. That means anyone who has a car on order that wasn't on that ship and hasn't started production just got pushed back another couple weeks or so. 1,100 across all models isn't that many really - total Porsche output in 2021 was 301,915 vehicles, They probably burn up that many test and track cars in a year..
If anyone is in the same boat as me (no pun intended) here is what the dealers received from Porsche directly regarding replacement cars.
I really hope mine gets built ASAP so I can take delivery of it this summer. That way I can at least enjoy it a little before winter storage. Ughh...what a an experience.
That letter from Porsche reflects a very high standard of commitment to good customer relations. Good on Porsche for that!
Now, I know it won't happen, but I'd cheerfully take any running and driving 911 that might come out of that ship. It might smell like the worst garbage fire imaginable, but I do love a project and I love a challenge even more!
However I think that any photos that may be forthcoming of the removal of the cars from that ship will all be in the "autopsy photos" category. I expect they'll almost all be burned out shells and puddles of metal.
