No owner has paid for the car. In fact it still belongs to porsche. The dealers haven't paid for the car either. I don't see how anyone would be out anything for something they haven't even paid for. It sounds cold but that is what it is, no?
it might be a different scenario if people already owned the cars, paid for it and then shipped it to a different location for whatever reasons and the ship went on fire. It would be an insurance thing for the owners of the cars at that point.

Let me try and explain. There were not 1,200 992s destroyed or damaged. How many we don't know. The initial news flash hit the mark in disseminating the information not only for general interest but especially for those who have vehicles on the Felicity Ace.
We now have experts who already know what happened, purport to guess what could have happened or pontificate as to the root cause.
I think we should leave this thread for news, updates and guidance if folks are contacted by Porsche or their dealers and what is being offered or talked about in terms of compensation. That is what I feel IMHO we should concentrate on and why Off Topic Threads are there for the rest.

why force people who have a general interest on the subject to follow two threads/forums on the subject?

Until they are in your yard, they are the legal property of the manufacturer.

No matter what happens, bet anything that the whole shipment is insured for full value. With this being (almost certainly) the case, Porsche will be made whole by the insurer,, that is, if they have the funds on hand to cover that large a loss.
After that, Porsche will most likely try to replace every car for which the owner still wants to proceed. It will result in a heavier than normal production schedule for Porsche, but do keep in mind that this carrier wasn't carrying the whole year's production, so it's not like they will have to double their production totals to make up for the loss. I don't really know the exact numbers, but apparently the USA deliveries in 2021 were about 70,000 so the 1100 Porsches on board figure sounds like about a week's production. So realistically, if the lost shipment was a week's production, they should be able to absorb that much work into their regular production schedule.
It's not like they lost all 300,000-ish cars built last year for the worldwide market.

Here's a U.S. based story on the ship from the Providence Journal. Really not a lot of content:

There are about 800 Porsches on board. That's from someone who knows. I didn't get the breakout by model.

My GT3 Touring is/was on that ship… 18 months of waiting… what a disaster. My words of wisdom. NEVER,EVER pre-trade a car…..EVER…

NOT necessarily true - IF someone had done European delivery they would have had to pay in full for the vehicle first. After their Euro vacation with their new 911 it then has to be shipped to the US - I would presume via the same process as a vehicle being delivered initially to a dealer. In that case you would be "out". It's a downside of Euro delivery - sometimes vehicles get damaged during transport. IF you hadn't taken delivery you would have the choice of refusing the vehicle and waiting for the next. IF you had purchased it via Euro delivery you're stuck with a repaired vehicle. It does happen.

that’s exactly what I did and it’s been a nightmare. I traded mine in in December expecting my cayenne Gts coupe to arrive in December. Sat at the port for 3 months and decided to get on the ship that caught fire…

I don’t think Porsche particularly owes the planned owners of these cars much. Yes, they should bump them up to the front of the line for the next allocation, or even create an allocation out of thin air if that’s possible to speed them up. But I don’t think they owe them anything beyond that. Only exception would be for ED cars for whom the owners are already on the financial hook. It’s not like this is something that they screwed up on, or that they have any control over.
It’s terrible news for all involved. Glad the crew got out safe. Must be terrifying to abandon ship in the middle of the Atlantic. Nobody does that unless they really think the ship is a lost cause.
