There’s a physical maximum level of boost the turbos can generate for a given amount of exhaust gas flow. At sea level, the stock tune keeps the turbos “underworked” by opening the wastegates, which means the turbos have reserve so they can “work harder” at higher altitude to increase boost and maintain engine power output. A “tune” taps into that reserve to provide more power at sea level, hence the turbos have less/no reserve left to compensate for altitude.

I was specific about a tune (i.e. software tune). Altering the hardware changes the thermodynamic margin. Bigger turbos are able to supply more boost and therefore make more power, there’s no denying that.

Also, tunes may be needed to ensure proper air/fuel ratios are maintained beyond the “normal” operating range of the engine at the extreme elevations of Pikes Peak.

There's a track battle on youtube between a 992 Base and a 996TT. Despite the higher HP of the TT, the Base won by 4 seconds on a short course with the same driver. I haven't driven a 992, base or otherwise, but fail to understand the need for more power than the base on a road car. Most people can't handle 4000HP at the limit. If you can and you want a track car, neither the Base nor the S are ideal anyway.
I did upgrade my brakes — rotors, pads, and brake fluid, that’s it! Two complaints though. I wish I had gotten the 18 way seats. Side of my knee starts to hurt from bracing myself during high-G action, seats with better bolstering would help. Extended range fuel tank would be great too. This thing eats gas on the track. About 1/2 tank per 30 minute session.

For what it’s worth I track my 992 base regularly. It’s great fun getting it to the limit. Yeah it’s kind of scary fast at times, but in a good way. It’s more than enough car for recreational track duty.

Here's the track battle video. Impressive that the 996TT with 420HP and AWD was so much slower than the 992 C2 without RAS. C2 is maybe 50lbs lighter.

Thanks for that data point. Yeah, brakes seem to be the weak point in the Base/T 991.2 and 992 from what I've read. As for seats, that's disappointing. I wanted buckets but they're not available and not cheap unless spec'd. I was hoping the 4ways would be good enough because they're not exactly heavy and they look good. They weigh about 45lbs each which is about the same as Recaro Sportsters with brackets. Only 11lbs ea. heavier than buckets. I did click the extended range fuel tank checkbox.

I forgot to mention what seats I have, they are the 14 way, and they disappoint. 4 way sport seats should be better for track duty. It’s too bad the Sport-Tex centers are so expensive, a non-leather center would even be better I’d think. They are standard on the T though. I’m actually on the list for a T, which will hopefully line-up with the 992.2 release.

The 18-way seats are fantastic for a dual use car. For street driving, I inflate the lumbar support and open up the seat-bottom and seat-back side bolsters for a nice comfortable seat. For the track, I deflate the lumbar support and tighten the seat-bottom and seat-back side bolsters for a snug bucket like fit. I have both configurations stored in memory buttons 1 and 2 so I can switch between street and track setups with the press of a single button. I use the third memory button to move the seat rearward by just the right amount to be able tighten and lock the seatbelt, so when I recall the “track” position I am locked into place. My wife has her own 3 seating positions stored in memory through her driver profile. A track buddy of mine that has a C2S with the 4-way Sport+ regretted not getting the 18-way when he tried them in my car. I would definitely recommend the 18-way seats for anyone who intends to use their 992 as a dual use street and track car.

More importantly for me, as someone who didn't love his 996, this video gives me hope about my incoming T.

It is too bad that Porsche doesn't have a ratcheting seat belt system like the corvettes where you can pull the belt all the way out then the ratchet holds them tight. Such an easy and cheap way to get securely in place for track driving. You put the seat back a little then ratchet the belt tight then move the seat forward and you are locked in tight. Nice feature I used every time on the track.
- Move the seat backwards
- Latch the seatbelt
- Pull up the seatbelt to tighten it snuggly around my hip bones
- Quickly tug forward on the belt at shoulder level to get it to lock
- Move the seat forward to the driving position while holding the belt tensioned to keep it locked

Perhaps Porsche doesn't install ratcheting on drivers seat since there will (presumably) not be a child seat there. Mentally? Maybe. But not physically.
