In Atlanta, I only trust Derek Johnson at Atlanta Protective Films. I tried another shop in Cumming due to scheduling issues and was not impressed at all with their work.

+1

Realistic expectations are needed. I'm sorry - but PPF is palpable and visible (to varying degrees). Marketing fluff about this stuff being 100% invisible is complete BS. Modern films are awesome and are "practically" clear, but acting like there is no difference is misleading.

Maybe not to a random person, but to anyone who knows about these films relative to bare paint can easily tell the difference. Even if the film has no peel to it, it has a depth of reflection greater than bare paint and is noticeable in anything but very flat light. Not saying there's anything wrong with it or that it looks bad, just that you can tell the difference.

The easiest way to tell is if the front has rock chips, then it doesn't have film.

I really like the way xpel makes the paint look...it's a smooth shiny finish without streaks.

I did the front clip and wish I'd done the whole car.

Other than some outstanding guys like JC, etc., the simple fact is that alot of these Xpel installers don't care about the small details. Lift marks, silvering, ragged edges, off center holes. These guys are probably used to doing contract work for dealers and putting clear bras with half hoods on a fleet of pickup trucks. I've had the same problem finding a decent tint shop. Alot of these guys are sketchy and cannot see or care what may bother the hell out of an owner. They are used to doing a "looks good at 10 feet" job, whereas I'm looking for "10 inch" results

Personally, I'm still undecided. I've had my car for a few weeks - there is a feel and look of raw metal and paint that is lost with Xpel. There is no way around the simple physics of putting a plastic layer over the paint. If you are willing to do the work and don't do a lot of highway miles, then nothing beats the glow and feel of naked paint with a great wax/sealer job.
Thank you gentlemen. We are not perfect but we give it our best.

Ah so we are in walking it back mode at least some.

Let's just say I'll take the combo of the vast majority who do not see it, plus the protection, over the few that can tell a difference.

Walking it back some? I just assumed that we weren't talking about random people walking down the street, you know, the kind that probably think your car is a Volkswagen anyway.

But you've got to get up real close to see the chips, whereas you can tell a car has film from 10 feet away...

people that use gas station drive throughs wont be able to tell. They don't see swirls, scratches, dents or rust. THOSE people can't tell. I can tell and that's enough on my car.

If I didn't have Derek, you would definitely be my first choice, but he has always done me solid.

Not sure what you are saying (what does make have to do with anything) but to put a number on it I'd go over 99%.

Good answer. Then annually you get car polished and chips filled in for fraction of the price of film and still get to wax paint............

PFF is to the current car business what Scotchguard and undercoating was to the 80's car biz.
