My wife, who is a hard core negotiator (CFO), was like "why do you want to talk" when we took a walk to discuss negotiating the price with the seller. Even she was like "just pay the asking price", and that's without her even knowing all that much about the Porsche market aside from what she overheard from me in the past.

Since we're sharing sad stories about cars lost...

I've been looking for a 991.1 Targa S and my three-must haves our MT, PSE and Prem Package Plus (really just want the entry/drive and ventilated seats). So after searching for about six months, one popped up in CA (I'm in FL) and for a reasonable price. Called them right away and we agreed on a price including shipping to FL and I was stoked! Scheduled the car for a PPI but before that could be arranged, they discovered the top wasn't functioning, so sent it off to a dealer for it to get repaired - and was told the part was back ordered for two weeks.

I told them I didn't care and was happy to wait. Next call I get is a week later telling me the car was on consignment and the seller decided they didn't want to sell the car. I figure there's a 99% chance they just got a better offer for the car as it was priced a bit below market IMO, so my guess is someone walked in, offered them over their asking price, and the dealer sold them the car and made up the whole story.

I'll probably give it a few more months before I just order a new Boxster GTS spec'd exactly the way I want it, because my budget of ~$100K has grown too small as Targa prices now seem to start north of $110k (usually well north) for what I'm looking for. There was a CPO Targa GTS in NOLA a few months ago for $105K that in retrospect I should have bought even though it was a PDK, because prices have gone so nuts in the last few months I could probably have flipped it for $15K even after taxes...

This just got listed! If it didn’t already have a 911 this would be very tempting... I have bought from Barnaba before and was a great experience.

fwiw, i don't think you'd be happy with a PDK if MT was your first must-have.

Not long-term, no - which is why I didn't buy it at the time. Just saying if I knew that GTS would now be going for $125k, I could have bought it and drove it around waiting for a MT to come up, then sold it and at the very least broke even. Plus I would have spend a couple of days in NOLA, which is always at the top of my things to do!

HOLY ****......that's expensive.

My 15 convertible GTS was $30k less than that with lower miles and with CPO left on it.

So I'll stick with my original analysis, "991 pricing is out of control right now"

Targas especially are completely out of control right now. The average 991.1 S with 30k miles was listed for about 70% of MSRP six months ago. Now it's hard to find one listed for anything less than 80%.

I would expect full leather for that price.

It looks like the pricing mania is going to get much worse before it gets better. It's the last week of April--prime driving season is just starting--and yesterday I was in Jack Daniels Porsche in NJ, which is a decent-sized dealership, and they had very few cars, even SUVs. In the showroom, there may have been two or three two-door cars and a small handful of Macans, Cayennes, and Taycans. The parking lot, which is usually full of cars for sale, had about 20% of usual stock. There wasn't a 911 in sight.

The sales guy we chatted with lamented about the chip shortage. This is very strange stuff.

As crazy as it may sound, leather or not, that price is a "deal" compared to what is going on with car prices these days. yes there are 40-60K high mile examples out there, but under 25,000 mile cars, especially Targas, fuggetaboutit!!!!

I'd be a little nervous about the market-distorting effect of the Sport Chrono stop-sale order. That will either go away quietly at some point, in which case you don't want to overpay now, or it will blow up into a full-fledged Dieselgate affair that results in all of the cars being recalled for neutering on penalty of registration refusal, in which case you don't want to overpay either.

But seriously... $114k? 30k premium for a Targa seems absolutely absurd. I just picked up a 991 GT3 for 119k with similar miles. I'd be shocked if that sold. Would be an interesting data point for this insane market.
