Definitely driving up to Monterey but not with the R this time - we just did 2 week road trip in the 981 Spyder with the LWB's so the wife wants a bit more comfort this go around...
Drove the R this morning on a spirited route in the canyons, and it really was exhilarating.
Can't wait to keep adding the miles.

Drove the R another 100 miles today - starting to come into its own...this car loves to rev. Very fun driving the back roads in the Malibu canyons this morning and again later today. This car just makes you want to keep driving. The wonderful, precise transmission, dialed-in suspension and neutral steering settings really make this car so entertaining in the twisties. Can't stop driving...

Does AP's 'break-in' advice have any basis in fact? I struggle to think that any of the factory cars were ever run in like that.
I just followed common sense, and the handbook - didn't (don't) drive it hard when cold or hold revs at a constant level for too long; went up and down the rev range, inc to max. Same way I've run in cars for 30 years and never had a problem yet.
Just turning 5k miles, more than one trackday, (and now on second set of tires). It's running and sounding noticeably better than ever, and anyone who's not driving them hard is missing out.

And all good points – agreed that break-in is more common sense than precise science.
Here is some background on Preuninger's break-in recommendation...
The break in recommendation was told to me by AP in 2015 and again by my host at the factory last year. This was said in response to my question as to what kind of person would have the self-control to follow the recommendation in the owner’s manual - 4000 rpm limit for the first 2000 miles! Apparently nobody at Porsche does that! AP’s break-in recommendation is just as much to break in the other mechanical components as the engine, and for the new owner to get used to the car. And for me, it was a welcome and realistic way (but still respectful and semi-official) compared to the torturous break-in recommendation in the owner’s manual.
And correct, that the factory owned cars are either not broken in at all, or at most driven with some restraint for the first ~250km and that’s it. But, AP’s recommendation is what is given when taking delivery at the factory – so good enough for me.
[For reference, AP’s break-in recommendation is 5k rpm limit for the first 1000 km, then add 1k rpm. And every following 500km, add an additional 1k rpm. In the early days, most important to vary the rpm, not lug the engine, and avoid continuous high load operation.]
