Little diversion from the car today: the matching helmet.

Starting with a brand spanking new white Bell Mag lid, first job is to mask off the inside before flatting off and painting the outer shell with a black primer base coat. Same treatment is given to the peak.

Meanwhile, on the car Mark is plugging away with the engine installation.

Gearshift cables and gearbox braces into the tunnel; engine in save for changing the 993 throttle body back to a 964 type (engine had Motec fitted previously) and thence adding the airbox; fuel pump going into the cavity under the tank; ecu and mounting plate screwed into the floor (complete with holes for the 6 point seatbelt anchors in the floor); fuel tank fitted, cleaned out and ready for fitting the central filler neck - note the filler pipe block off on the top right.

Stage 2 of the helmet design are the colour block layout lines.

Great work....but looking at the scuffs on the helmet.....has Mark been wearing it when working under the car as part of the 9M H&S procedure?

The paint is just black basecoat, which surprisingly enough won't key to fibreglass gelcoat unless the brand new shiny white lid is flatted down. Scuffs indeed.

Exhaust fitted. We debated about fitting a set of headers for the tests, but in the end the stock exhaust won favour due to known noise level and compatibility with the mapping of the Motronic ecu. If we pop a Motec under the seat and remap it, a set of headers will definitely be tried.

And there is 9l of oil in the engine and system now, but unfortunately no matter how I tried, I could not capture it on camera once the tank was full.

Not to dilute this peerless thread, but is this a stock primary? I'm about to start a basic backdate on my 964, and was under the impression that the standart primary won't fit under a pre '74 bumper ? Primary bypass was my solution ( with the obvious additional benefits!!)..Help please !!

The news from the workshop is that the primary would fit with gentle modification to the bumper, but since this is a temporary exhaust solution we have adopted the same approach with a Cup pipe and secondary silencer rather than chop the carbon unnecessarily. The upside to this is that we know the exhaust will now run at around 104-105dBa at 0.5m which is just on the UK trackday limit whereas the primary with a G-pipe would have been 105-107dBa. Photo update later.

Revised exhaust configuration, just as Mozsan predicted. Fortunately with a simple chop of an old 964 tailpipe we can exit the secondary silencer below the bumper without having to cut any holes, leaving the bumper fresh for the time the new 9m 3.82 Race engine is installed with its CFD tuned headers.

Gearbox oil pump has now been machined to receive an Aeroquip connection and refitted to the 'box.
