Interesting. Let me guess, you bought that red S4 from Ocean Shores? So it wasn't as advertised? It "looked" pretty nice from the ad.

I spoke with the guy last night. Said his mechanic told him it was an S4 because of the 32 valve engine. Had car for 2 years, doesn't know alot about the car, says fan belt missing but it runs. No maint records.

My mistake, thought he was saying it was an 86.5 by saying it was an S4.

I guess his mechanic doesn't know 928's. (Run!!!) 86.5 has S4 upgrades but the pipe organ intake manifold gives it away (Plus the V.I.N Number).

So, I had to pay $14K for an S4 back in 2010, with 133K miles on the clock in very good condition. Rumors say values are going up. So if a stealership is charging less than $11K for this car, I'm thinking very sad thoughts or this car is somehow junk.

Another post proving that S4 values have plummeted, rather than increased. The Hagerty valuation on a manual 89 in only "good" condition is north of $20K, and this car looks better than good. Yet, the ask is only $15K.

I guess I need to *way* revise my asking price to comport with reality.

Hagerty doesn't account for mileage. This car has over 130k miles. An almost similar S4 just sold on BaT for $13,500. So I'd say $15K is spot on for the ask.
http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-porsche-928-2/

On the other side this '89 5-speed with 53k miles went for over $35K. And that's just one of 4 S4s that went for over $20K over at BaT. And two of them went for over $40K!
http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1989-4/

So lower mileage, good condition, S4s with desirable colors and options are anything but plummeting in value.

Also if you sell your 928 now anywhere but BaT your are just throwing money away.

What I am saying is, I had to pay $14K for an 88 auto with 133K miles. That was in 2010. And the car was not perfect, although it was generally well-maintained. So, values of that type of S4 have gone nowhere but down.

Yes, values have taken forked roads; anything with less than 75K miles is taking off; high-mile daily drivers, no matter how good the condition, you can't give them away.

I find it amusing that I bought a 2005 Maserati with 46K miles for $23K, and I actually kind of overpaid for it. This is a car with a 400 hp Ferrari engine, every electronic bell and whistle under the sun, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. Hand-stitched Poltrona Frau leather interior. 17 years younger than my poor old S4 which it eats for breakfast. So glad I didn't waste $40K on a better-looking S4. Yeesh.

also need to click onto the "sold listings" box on the left column occasionaly to see what recent 928's have actually been sold for...provided they don't magically reappear ! http://www.ebay.com/sch/Cars-Trucks/...p2045573.m1684 Do admit thought that if one can get there car "approved" by BAT, that's the way to go.
