fitted a replacement heater fan to my 81.original one was seized and would blow the fuse if switched on.i had gotten a used one from an s4 a couple of months ago, outer housing was different but that might have been because mine is lhd and the part came from a rhd anyway the fan its self was compatible. job done, finally have a full functional heater.

Fitted a new compressor, new expansion valve, new rubber seals through out, new dryer. Now to pull a good vacuum and see if it holds....if not, I may go jump off a bridge...assuming of course I can find a stream with water still in it....

Jim,

Don't give up yet.

I have recently and still am battleing the AC monster. Mostly my fault in the end but pulled a vacuum on mine for a long time and still had issues once under pressure so nitrogen pressure is the definitive test for o rings.

I had my compressor tested by a local rebuilder who rebuilt my lines and declared it good but under use with R134 is leaking at the compressor seams so off it comes again. Hey, I spent $25 on it

It has been a great learning experience. Good luck

Hey Jim, appreciate the words of wisdom. I will try the vacuum pump first, if it leaks I will chase down the pressure nitro test. I am staying with R-12 so I don't really want to waste a bunch of it.....You are correct about these cars being a learning experience. What I have mostly learned so far leads me to believe I do not want to be a 928 mechanic when I grow up!

In the last 2 weeks; MM, WP, TB, all new tensioners, new compressor, new alternator, new oil pan gasket, new Flowmaster 2x2, new front crank seal, all the AC stuff, also had to replace the aluminum tube that goes from the fuel cooler over to the compressor, also had to replace the AC hoses, fortunately I got a decent used pair of those from Mark Benton at a reasonable price. And of course it has been 100 degrees in the garage for 2 months just to give me even more to cry about.... but the new 4 post hoist is like a breath of fresh air. No more rolling around on the hot driveway....

And oh by the way, I really do enjoy the 928's.....if I didn't have the 928 to keep me busy I might have to take up golf to give me something to do....

It's not what I did to my 90 S4 today, but what I did to it yesterday.
I had just gone thru changing the MM, OPG, Steering rack, Inner & outer tie rod ends, WP, Crank shaft seal, Oil pump seal, cam adjustment, rebuilt tensioner, power steering hose replacement and all accessory belts. Completed it last weekend and life was good, I had being driving it in town without any problems.
Last November I had done all the brakes and shocks.
Yesterday I took it on the highway and was enjoyed a brief stint on how it responded and how smooth it was riding. Came home and parked it. Went out to the garage a few hours later and saw a puddle on the floor. Looked under the car and water was dripping by the front of the oil pan.
So this weekend, hopefully, go back in and check the new pump and if it is still good change out the gasket.
Good part got to drive my 91 GT today.

lmao, one of the tags for this thread is 'plentyoffish,' to which a quick Google search yields an online dating site. Owned.

removed the hood and fitted a new underhood mat to my 81,surprisingly lowly priced from mainstealers. refitted the hood and fine tuning the gaps.looks like new under there again.another job crossed off the list, next up gas filler tank top seal as soon as it arrives from the dealers.

Wrapped up a week of activities:

Kudos to the guy (can't remember which thread it was) who suggested running to the hardware store and buying a #8 bolt about 20mm longer than the originals on the gas tank restraining straps... Totally changed a PITA job to doable in 3 minutes.

New fuel filter, fuel pump, and replaced (yep busted) in-tank pump with strainer (nod to Roger for suggestion and including all the right parts).

Changed oil and filter for the first time since purchase.

Replaced "holed" oil cooler with refurbished cooler (thanks again Roger for remembering to include the replacement O-Rings in my last order).

And replaced all the fuel lines up front (Roger's kit).

Shout out to NC928S4 (Larry) for coming by this morning to hold the other end of the wrench and wrestling those fittings. Amazing how much faster 928 jobs go the second time you do them. Previous experience is priceless!

My 90 S4
Seems like I dodged a bullet. Jacked the car up thinking I would have to redo the water pump due to a leak. Drained all the coolant water out in the block and te radiator. Started to take the upper hose off and found water in the valley. Looked at the upper hose and it was lose. Took it off, inspected and cleaned and reinstalled it. Ran the car on jack stands for an hour and there was a snall drip from the reservoir hose. Tightened it up and ran it for another 15 mins and no leak. Letting the car cool down and will inspect to see if there are any futher leaks.

Today I am taping out the stripped block drain with a 1/4 x 18 plug tap and installing these

I should not have to worry about removing the plugs when I want to drain it any more.

What I was wondering is how will the brass react with the alumisil.

Any thoughts

Thanks
Brad

I agree Sterling, but in my area I would not be able to buy one so I thought it may be quicker if I did it this way.
It might be something one of the venders want to put together and advertise.
I am half way done on the one side.

Thanks for the advice and info.

Be sure to use Nylog on your o-rings when doing AC work. There is R12 and R134 versions available. Your bigger home AC supply companies should stock this. I put it on every and I mean every o-ring on my AC system when I did my AC rebuild. No leaks first time.

Thanks to Sean R for the tip on Nylog.
