Audio Upgrades, thanks Hans for Speaker Grills
Good progress this week on the “Tokyo Shark.” 3 weeks into 928 ownership. Still waiting on exhaust, so attention on detailing. Completed a full colour correction, and steamed cleaned and conditioned the interior leather.
Audio was really bothering me, and the subject of much ridicule. A previous owner had thrown away the head unit and front speakers, and replaced it with an Alpine deck and 4 cheap speakers, 2 of which were blown. Worse, he fashioned some cover plates out of old coffee can lids and just screwed them to the doors. Janky!
Decided to install a complete 6 speaker set that came with crossovers, good sound at a reasonable price without going crazing (for now). Front speakers location for tweeter was still looking terrible because of the unusual size in the 928.
There is an original door grill set on eBay, with cracks, for over $200. Ouch! Searching this forum, I found threads referring to Hans and his replacement front grill assembly. Hans was great, he sold me a set and shipped them out immediately and all I can say is the difference is outstanding... Thanks Hans! Not only is the look restored, but the sound is better because the tweeters now aim forward and fill the dash.
This DIY was driving me crazing, and the subject of much ridicule. Spousal acceptance rating near zero
Had to dremel out the back plate, and glue in the new tweeter
Decided to aim the tweets forward to fill the dash area and improve sound stage.
Success. Looks almost factory.
Period correct green buttons. Not sure what this bright red light is all about. Seems to indicate fan/climate control is on.

Replaced a tie-rod
...that I found needed replacing a few weeks after I had an alignment done; so, I rigged up a means of marking the toe prior to removing the old one (with the rack locked with the centering bolt), and adjusted to new one to match - worked great!

I just received a set of keys from Keys4Classics, and they work so much better than the hand cut key that came with the car.
The old key would hang up a little every time I inserted or removed it from the locks, due to weird file cuts to each position.
The new keys are beveled cleanly between the positions and move freely in each of the locks.
Once I had confirmed that the keys worked well, I took a look at the glove box lock that I just received from 928 international, and discovered why there aren't any instructions written up about re-keying them.
They are so simple to disassemble, it doesn't need much more than a flat screwdriver and a pair of snap-ring pliers.
Move a couple of blades around and match it to your key, before reassembling it and going on to another project.

Burning Brakes
Summer is here for me finally! Been running it down to work in Baltimore recently. Put over 200 miles on in two days. Its been hot; so loving that my AC actually works!
I guess this is a more of a "what did you do WITH your 928" statement.

I showed my 928 at the 64th annual Hillsborough Concours last Saturday and in the Recent classics class, took First place over a 2003 Carrera 4S and a 2002 Cabriolet

I took my 928S to PCA tech and failed spectacularly. Well, I think the actual words were "carbeque!"
Suspension is fine, however the amount of dried oil and junk on the underside of the engine flipped them out. No I am not burning oil, but I am burning power steering fluid. So I took the car this evening to the car wash, set for engine degrease, and spent some time firing it under the car, top of the car, and around the PS reservoir. My guess is the PS return line is leaking, fun...
Speaking of which, the guy there said to always use ATF in the power steering system and not power steering fluid. Is this true?

Today I suctioned out all the old PS fluid from the tank, pulled the return line, cleaned it up, drained all the oil I could from that, cleaned it again and re-attached it to the reservoir. With that done I filled it up with ATF, started the car, no drips. Should be clean enough for me to see something going on. If it leaks again I might try trimming off the top centimeter of the line and try plugging it in further down to seal better before replacing the whole line.
