I think the problem is that we don't KNOW if it is a decent S4... If it needs a new motor because the end play is out of tolerance you are looking at buying a used motor and putting it in (that would be about $5k+) or buying a block and rebuilding (that would be $12k+) and that does not even touch anything else. The A/C compressor does not even have a belt on it. When was the last time you started replacing stuff in the A/C system in these cars? You can spend $4k on that before you even blink! So, if you had to do a full A/C and buy a used motor is $14k a good deal for a 130k+ (we don't even know how many miles because you also need a new pod for what? $800...$1000?) mile '89? NO! That is no longer a good deal...
Just saying it might be the deal of a lifetime or it might be years of freaking frustration trying to iron out all the kinks. I have a good friend who IS a buyer if the car does not need ANY engine work and if the A/C was working, but he has had his share of A/C woes in his old '88 S4 and he is NOT GOING THERE AGAIN...he spent $13k on work over a 3 or 4 year period and most of that was on the A/C! Yea, he didn't know better and got ripped a few times, so this time he would do better, but still the frustration factor is WAY TO HIGH...
So, don't start ripping on me...I would buy this car in a heart beat if we actually KNEW more about it!

If anyone is serious about potentially buying this, I'd be happy to go by and have a look at it & take lots of pictures. Send me a PM as I tend not to be on this forum over weekends.

I'm just saying that people here tend to assume the worst about any car that comes up. Sure you can always worst case senario any car purchase. That is what a good PPI is for. Also, most 928s aren't going to have cracked blocks and TBF.
I also see no reason to think that the OP is trying to hide a major flaw like this. If I were a well meaning seller, I might be a little insulted by the suggestion. Again, nothing a good PPI wouldn't protect you from. Otherwise, sure there are probably a good 3-4 grand worth of maintenance you could spend to get the car in better shape. But, a lot of these things are areas that a lot of 928s may end up needing anyway. Top end refresh, ?torque tube, steering rack, etc.........
As far as the AC, I must have missed where the belt was off the compressor. This is an area that can get expensive and is the reason that my 928 has luke cool AC. Too many other things that I would rather spend on fixing up. In fact, I'd rather get a sharktuner Mk II than have colder AC. So, some people may not be too bothered about the AC.
Its just that when these cars come up, a lot of people seem to pile on about how bad the car could be. No wonder 928s have a bad rap and people are scared to buy them.
But, then again, maybe it is all part of your plan to scare off the others so that you can own them all. BWAAAHHHAAAHHHAAAAAHHHAAAAA.

""Steve your car is in a different league than mine. I have always loved red interiors. Mainly on German/Italian cars. Your car is a great deal as well.""
There is some confusion here, partly my fault, I hijacked it somewhat by posting another eBay car. The one I posted is not my car. "No affiliation" just adding to the mix.

I hope BB takes my advice, resolve a few issues and have some kind of PPI done, then start over with a new price. $3950 seems fair enough for a 89 S4 that has some questions about it, but once those questions are answered the price needs to go up to match the answers.

Perhap's the reason 928's get a bad rap is because unsuspecting buyers buy into the hype of a less than candid seller only to get it home and find that to bring the car to the condition matching the sellers description, will cost an additional $10,000.

I agree, and when you here a "like new" interior description and can SEE the seat cracks in a crappy web pic you REALLY start to wonder... That is all I am saying. If you say "like new" ANYTHING the you better be looking at a NEW car when you make that comparison. If it is looks good for a 20 year old car then say it has an original 20 year old interior that seems to be wearing better than average or something like that.
If the interior were REALLY LIKE NEW, the interior alone would be worth $5k!
Again, guys I am not saying this isn't the greatest 928 deal on the planet, I am just saying that due to the description not matching the pics and so much being left out it leaves me very skeptical. Had the description been SPOT ON from the beginning we would not be having a 4+ page chat about this, it would have already been sold...

since when does the car need a new pod???? I told you the previous owner had it REPLACED.
I don't know if the a/c works, sorry. Maybe I should go have it fixed so I can sell the car for six grand, would you be happy then.
James why don't you start a new thread nit picking every last problem this car has so you can finally run the price down to 500 bucks.
In the mean time, I hope your friend is able to find the perfect car with a/c and a brand new engine for only 3900 bucks.
I seriously feel like I'm taking crazy pills here...
THIS CAR IS NOT PERFECT!
I never said, "This car is perfect!"
(hence the low price...hello...)
If you don't have anything positive say, please stay the hell out.
Danglerb, gave me some great suggestions last night to ensure a quick, smooth transaction.
Some of that advice included getting the smog done, and listing all the known problems the car has.
Among a few other things. All was very solid advice.
Truth is, I just want the car GONE. I'm selling it as-is, where-is, so I don't have to deal with all that. This is one reason it's so cheap! I thought by almost "giving it away" I could avoid all the frustration of having certain guys roll my name through the dirt. Thanks.
Jim your right. I'm no 928 guru. Everything I know, I learned here and from Mike F. If it wasn't for this and the other 928 forum, I would be completely in the dark concerning this automobile.
So, I'm defending your comment and letting everyone know I'm new to 928's as well.
New price 3800.
Flame Away.

I want to mention one last thing.
If I was trying to scam anyone I would have done it by now.
I have had seven guys want to fly down and drive the car home RIGHT NOW. But I was completely honest and told them I don't know the car well enough to promise it will be a trouble free drive home.
If I just wanted their money, how easy would it have been for me to say "hell yeah! come get it!"
But that's not me. I want the next person to not only feel good about the deal, but have a good experience with the car as well.
I'm not a shyster, and don't plan on becoming one anytime soon.
Well, thanks to everyone who have been supportive, those nice comments feel great.
