Seriously though, there are plenty of guys on the left coast that might be interested in the car and are within driving distance.

I am with Dangler, seems like a (better then) fair price for an S4, so take cash, get a PPI and make a deal. Who cares why he is selling it? Maybe this is the most generous 928 seller out there, or maybe not.........who cares, let the PPI do the talking, right?

Naa, I figure with transport and fixing the AC (of which is keeping me very busy this past two weeks on cars because it's farking 103 degrees higher than hell here) then I'd have that 4k S4 I keep looking for.

Are you folks friggin kidding me? This car by the looks of it alone is a fantastic price! And unless BB79 is flat out lying, the description of the mechanicals is sound.
Come on guys, less than 4 grand for a running S4? Have we gotten that jaded here? You've got to be kidding me! I've seen countless of similar cars in similar condition advertised for $10K ++, and getting it, with absolutely no discussion of flex plate end play or anything other than timing belt and water pump. Will it take 15K plus to get it all the way back, hell yes, but so would any comparable S4 going for 12K. Jeesh!!!
A simple ppi to validate the condition as described, then a plane ticket and a nice drive home would be the way to go here. And folks, I've been around here for awhile now, and I don't know BB79 from Adam (yet), but I've bought lesser looking sharks for more, and have been plenty satisfied with what I had.

Think the mention of pod was that you said the odometer on the electronic instrument panel was inop.
I've heard the electronic cluster is not cheap.
Not like the mechanical little white breaking plastic gear on the older clusters.

A/C can be anything.
Be nice if you can find out if it's just leaked out all the freon. Easy to fix busted activation relay in the HVAC controller. Or something worse.
My A/C died one summer. The little thin A/C clutch activation wire had fallen off the spade connector.
That's probably the simplest repair ever.

I agree - I was one of the early interested parties and BB79 was very straight with me - and I greatly appreciate it.

We all know that we can put a lot of money into these cars - they are 20 years old and even a great PPI is not going to find all the issues that happen on old cars.

I hope it goes to a good home.

I think my 87 for $5k ad was taken to heart aye...... I guess it's time to teach car ad 101

And now - back to your regular program....

BB79, what we have here is a simple failure to communicate. Please put on a fresh pair of eyeballs and have a look back with me at your original posts: Not much real information there, right? And some of what was there, wasn't quite right, like the "interior looks new" comment. (History, agreed, but off-putting to folks who know what a new interior looks like). There were a few pic's but (how to say this nicely?) not the best quality, and no close-ups and no engine pic's.

And to he honest, this particular comment raised some serious alarm bells:

What the heck does that mean? Lots of 928's have no relay issues, while others are rolling salvage.

You were also asked some serious questions which I don't think ever got answered: Why total-miles-unknown? What is the crankshaft end-play? What's the story on the A/C issues? In post-23 you promised engine pictures, did those get posted?

Now please consider your audience: I'm new here myself, but I think we can agree that most folks here know cars pretty well, and know a great deal about 928's. And anyone who has been involved with cars for very long, yourself included, develops a certain skepticism about "for sale" ads. You focused on polish but I am guessing that most folks here would be more interested in mechanical details (there is some aversion to glitter).

You basically said "trust me". But on what basis? Again, with fresh eyes, you reply to folks by name but don't include your own. And you've only been active here two months, and have only driven this car 100 miles. I think it is reasonable that a lot of folks are skeptical.

Please note that none of the above has anything to do with price. Is it the deal of the century or a roller with polish? Based on the info presented I have no idea, and I think the variety of responses simply reflects varying levels of skepticism.

One suggestion would be to close this thread and start fresh with some real information about the car, and some decent pic's. But whatever, I wish you good luck with the sale.

Jim

Jim, very well put. You have said exactly what I have tried unsuccessfully to communicate to Blythe. When the new guy shows up with the deal of the century I have a tendency to roll away, and the sad part is that this is a car I would seriously be interested in...

I have a buddy who is looking to get back in to 928's after a 10 year drought and he likes gray to boot. It would be a great car for him, but he has already had his frustrations with 928's and needs one that is AWESOME and not in need of $5k or $10k or whatever worth of work. As you noted Jim we have no idea what we are looking at with this one.

Oh, Blythe, those who pointed it out are correct about the pod question. You said you have NO IDEA what the miles are on this car, by that I took it to mean that the digital display was kaput. That is expensive to replace...all I am saying.

So, Blythe, you drive it to D/FW for OCIC in 4 weeks and I'll give you $4000 for it when you get there! Cash money...

Not if I can get time off and fly out to Cali first.....
Just sayin.

But I would take time to stop in Texass and show it off - or cry about the car.

After watching this thread develope some things come to light.

1. If you think you are going to find a car that sold new for 60k-80k that is perfect for 4k something is seriously wrong with that thinking.

2. Someone offers a great deal and gets beat up for it.

If I'm going to sell a car for a cheap price I'm not going to put much effort into it. I sold an old work truck last month for 1k and it was dirty and needed an oil change. Now I could have cleaned it up and sank more money into and sold it for more but I didn't. I don't know BB79 but I think he looks at it the same way. Sell as is cheap or sink money he may not get back out of it and sell for higher.
Either it is what you are looking for or not. Seems like a good price either way you are going to sink money into these cars the newest 95' GTS is 15 years old after all.
