Can we have an explaination of how this all happened. Just driving down hyway 5 and it grenaded ?

What happened in the engine? Doesnt look like a bearing failure, or is it? I thought someone said that the bearings looked good, and it was just the rods that failed.

Mark: See post #1:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...eap-twice.html

The bearings were MIA- totally gone. Some (but certainly not all) was in the oil filter but my guess is they've been disappearing slowly for a long time.

I can't help but wonder if someone replaced the 2/6 bearings at some point and didn't properly torque the rod nuts, or maybe they just never got changed. I haven't made a spreadsheet of all the records I have from the car (back to the window sticker) but am not sure whether such a receipt would be in there anyway.....

The motor was dangling 7 feet in the air on Mark's forklift, so we didn't get a comprehensive look at it. I'll tear it apart this weekend for a better view. Time to buy a die grinder.....

I suspect the bearing halves will turn up in large (and small) chunks throughout the engine.

Looks like the bearing inserts disintegrated and then, with enough play, the cr nuts got popped off. Wow!! And BTW, you get many manly points for good attitude! Some, not sayin' who, might have taken a large calibre piece and put another hole in it somewhere... Good luck with all this and I don;t think I even have to say, " keep us posted"...

I've seen spun bearings cause con rods to cut the block completely in half. This is pretty mild. Honestly I wouldn't rule out being able to salvage that engine just yet.

Wow that is some luck there. Most of the time when a bearing goes the connecting rod begins punching holes on the side of the block. It looks like the block can be saved, but we won't know for sure until we see the cylinders from the top.

That is where they drilled the counterweight to remove weight, when the engine was balanced. The angle cut is because they need to "get around" the other counterweights....either that or Kibort was here, with his axe.

OK, someone has to say it...THAT'LL BUFF RIGHT OUT! Actually the crank and block look like they might be useable after some hearty cleanup. The cylinder wall will probably be the biggest deal.

Still feel like I dodged a bullet on this one, I was heavily considering buying it. I had seen the car in person and it is beautiful, a prime candidate for the stroker.

I don't know..but lets play devils advocate for a sec... so...$22K for a nearly mint GTS 5sp, great color combo, nicely taken care of....and bad engine assuming a block that can be re-used ...... still not bad in my eye's. Now if the engine still ran well after he got it home..$22k is an absolute steal...

So.new oil pan..polish crank..new bearings..new rods...new pistons....lets say he puts 10K into it... so he's out $32 K now for a mint GTS 5sp with a solid rebuilt engine... still damn good... You'll come out of this well indeed....

The motor from your Sebring adventure didn't look that bad except for the crank was worse.
