I think for the money these are hard to beat. Using 21 mm spacers with 285/30 x 18 the fit is great. Should be good even with dropping the ride hit a bit. Still not sure what I'm going to do with the front.

I mounted a front with stock alignment and 275/35 slick. It stuck out some, but it wasn't horrible. I have seen 928s at events that were far worse. At stock ride height with stiff suspension, I think you'd be fine. I took pics but the memory card crapped out. I may look into changing to the shorter later A-arms and/or rolling the fenders so I can lower the car with them.

I didn't drive. I just mounted it, dropped the car, took pics, and swapped the Hoosier DOTs back on. The wheels and tires are in my friend's hauler now so I can't retest fit them for now. I probably won't see them again until late March.
A comment from another guy picking up his tires at Phil's Tire Service, "Those are going on that blue 928? Holy f*ck that thing will be scary fast!". FYI, Kim and Phil said the Hoosier slicks do not like a lot of camber. Kim said a street alignment will actually be pretty good for slicks which is why I'm thinking shorter later arms.

Well, I got some tires and have some information.
First 285-35-18's work fine on the rear with the 10 in. wheels as suspected, with no adaptations at all. If you have the fenders rolled just a bit, a 295 would clear as well.
I tried 255-35-18 on the 8 in. wheels on the front and they just barely rub the rear of the fender opening on the inside - darn side moulding trim piece... That was before the suspension settled. When it settled, I think they would clear easily, but not to take any chances, I ordered 245-35-18's instead, their dimensions suggest that they will clear easily. I'll know on tuesday.
We moved one of the 285-30-18's on the 10 in. wheel to the front and it clears better than the 255-35-18. Hmmm... diameter does matter. we cranked the wheels from lock to lock and it just clears - the thickness of a credit card. A 275-30-18 would be great, but they are supposedly almost impossible to find. That would give about an 1/8 in. more clearance in diameter and about the same in width, but... if you can't find them, then it doesn't matter.
In any event, now I know.
I'll probably try the 295-30-18 on the 87 with the rolled fenders when I get to it, but for now, enough money spent.

Awesome Rod, thanks for the info.
Can you post the brand and model of each tire you tested with?

Some additional data points on my replica Turbo Twist Mille Miglias - on my '88 S4:
Both of these setups work great on the S4, no rubbing.
Toyo Proxes RA1 (track tires):
Ft: 245/45 ZR18 - 18 x 8 1/2" ET 52
Rr: 275/45 ZR18 - 18 x 10" ET 65
Pirelli P7000 (street tires)
Ft: 225/40 ZR18 - 18 x 8 1/2" ET 52
Rr: 265/35 ZR1818 x 10" ET 65
The Toyos are a bit tall so are not ideal, but they were a major bargain (shaved and heat cycled) and since I'm no Mario Andretti, and I'll just be burning them off on the track, I'm not too concerned about it. And Chuck Briggs is running them on his race 928 and they are working great for him.

Hmmm, they couldn't find the 245's in Hankook, so we tried a set of Falken FK452's and since they don't make the 285 we tried 295's and they fit perfectly.
So the rears are 295-30-18 and the fronts are 245-35-18.
I noted that the drivers side rear fender was not rolled and the passenger rear was rolled???? but the clearance was such that they would clear easily even if not rolled.
So have fun guys.
Also, the people at Discount TIre were great about trying everything to make sure there were no clearance problems, so if you go to a local store, put in a good work for Discount Tire in Muncie, Indiana. You can never tell when a little good will might come back.
