I have some 265/40-18's coming off my 997 wheels i might install on these just to test fit on the front of my 79.

My 255-35-18 wouldn't fit - too large diameter - 30's would be great, if you could find them in the right width. With the 40's AND a wider tire, I think you're going to have clearance issues at the rear of the wheel well. However, the earlier models don't have the same side trim wrapping into the wheel well, so that might make a difference.

Let me know how it works, it will give me some info for the 82.

Hmm... I only paid attention to fit at the top, not front and back. I think I would have noticed if the 275/35-18s were that close.

I just tried the Miata tire calculator; 255/35-18 is 25" and 275/35-18 is 25.6" Both should easily fit. There are people running well over 26" tires, such as H-P's 26.3" 265/40-18s, on various wheels.

Are you saying that they hit the fenders or they hit the fender liners when you turn?

They just touched the body trim piece that turns into the wheel well over the top of the fender liner (on an S4). It was just touching when I turned the wheels out - the diagonal dimension is a lot more than the diameter. I didn't see any reason to take a chance and the 245's clear easily.

The top and front cleared easily.

Does this clearance give you a margin of safety for chuck holes and hard cornering?

The 255's were too close in my opinion for those reasons. I believe the 245's will be fine.

I'm surprised that there aren't more pics of the installed rims on here. I'd be interested. I may have found a smokin deal on a set of these so I too may be installing them. I'd really like to see an OB with them installed. Jason

My fronts are already on. I picked up some OE 18x8s from Philly last week with tires for $300. I swapped the 80 spindles onto my 84 this weekend and installed the GT brakes. The 80 now has S brakes. I'll probably get the rears on this coming weekend when I do the rear GT brakes. For now I have 225s on the front, but will switch to 255s when those wear out. For the rears I'm going to run 275s just because they are quite a bit cheaper than 285s ($50/tire for Sumitomo HTR ZIIIs).

I got the rears mounted up yesterday and put them on the car last night. The fronts are OE Bridgestone 225/40R18s that came with the 18x8s I bought. The rears are Sumitomo HTR ZIII in 285/30R18. Rim and tire weighs 61 pounds for the rear. I don't know what the fronts are. They do clear the stock rear fenders without any rolling and with the factory spacers. I did have to pull the driver's side fender out a little by hand to get rid of some rubbing under compression, but it wasn't a big deal. The passenger side never rubbed. A 295 would not fit with the spacer on there. With the spacer off, it looks like a 305 would probably fit. Yes I know I need to wash my car.

Ok, now put those rears on the front and report back

I have a 17x10 with a 265 on the front my car car right now - doesn't rub but the offset is in the 40's so it looks rather silly.

I mounted Hoosier 275/35 on all 4 rims and put the wheels on the car. The back has a 21mm spacer minus 1/4' so about 14.5 mm. The rear driver's side clears well and the rear passenger side is very close but has about 1/8' clearance. Inside clearance front and back looks OK. I drove 20 or 30 miles and it's OK now. I'll have to wait for the front to settle to make final judgement. I am at stock height, don't recall exactly how high.
