Glad to hear that there was apparently no problem with the motor internals. Hopefully the oil pump will be the only problem...Will you be going ahead with the 16 valve engine swap if you just need an oil pump?

On another note..If you decide to re-line the rubber contraption at the front of the TT tunnel, I've been working on mine for about 2-3 days now. I've invested in Kool Mat which seems to be a real killer to work with. I would also suggest that whatever route you decide to go, get some 3m upholstrey & headliner spray glue..Really great stuff..A few clamps from Harbor F will be good too. My sound deadener assy was all beat to crap by PO's and weather. So I'm refurbing it for better appearance and function..Adding some more Kool Mat to the TT tunnel as well.Probably will be adding more of it to the inside to save a bit of weight from the factory rubber stuff they used in the footwells ..Stay cool guys and drink plenty of fluids..Summer is almost here!

when i did my firewall insulation "rubber saddle thing" years ago, i used some foil/mylar faced jute-like stuff and bonded it to the rubber with contact cement via brush/roller. really potent smelly stuff.

taped the seams and edges with shiny HVAC tape, has held up since 2006 no problem.

interesting discoveries so far...
all 4 rod journals and rod bearings are in very good shape.
however 3 of the MAIN bearings have very unusual wear/damage on them...ive never seen this before. pics later if i remember. oddly the crank Mains are still perfect.

crank is removed, oil pump is totally jammed on the snout. am going to disassemble the oil pump from the back side since can't get the drive sleeve off the front...but of course, i don't have a long 4mm allen key to get those screws loose

- fixed a broken clutch master cilinder.
- repaired a coolant hose that got grinded by the water pump pulley.
- got replacement for cracked windshield and let repair some rust underneath, needed a local respray incl. roof
- fresh gearbox oil (Swepco 210)
- oil & filter change (Mobil1 Motorsport 10w60)
- new inner shift boot
- fresh brake fluid (Castrol SRF)

Still waiting for a set of GT-style head lights which I ordered from GTP Headlights and will get a custom made outer shift boot (black leather, red stitches)

good news and bad news...

it turns out that the oil pump rotor (outer circular gear) had jammed or slightly welded itself to the steel rear oil pump body.
but i had to destroy an oil pump and otherwise perfectly useful crankshaft to come to this conclusion

the oil pump drive sleeve is also practically welded to the crank. i cut it in half and it wouldn't budge...the cut went too deep and now theres a nice circlip groove on the crank

You're probably the first person ever to have a failed 944 oil pump. Generally it has plenty of lubrication...

yeah, it's a head scratcher for sure. especially considering how well it drove the day before it seized solid.

wait til you see the crazy main bearing wear though, despite the crankshaft being fine...

Perhaps you can send the crankshaft out and have the affected area metalized and reground back to spec..and perhas..just perhaps..save having to purchase another crank, sending it out to be polished, journals radiused, cross-drilled??? and have the counterweights knife-edged.....and checked for straightness as well.. You must have caught it "just in time" to prevent further damage to the engine. Still you need to give it a good cleaning to remove any metal particles...just sayin..Good luck and good work, Spencer!!

Well, I just broke the windshield on the passenger's side fitting the hood struts

Who designed it to have hood shocks longer than they should be to allow the hood to contact the windshield? Really stupid design on Porsche/VW's part.

It's a 30 second 1 person job on the 928. Why the hell is it so much more troublesome on a 944....

I think this must be at least the 10th time I've read about someone doing this, how does it happen? What can you do about it?
