Default Track car; 928 vs. 951

I just posted this same question on the 928 forum...

Hi all,

Just curious, which is a better track car...a later 928 (300hp) vs a 951 or even a 944s2? Both cars would be put on diet and stripped of non esentials.

Criteria for comparison
1. Lap times
2. Cost (some tweeking)

Thanks for any input.

James

951s are easier than 928s to coax power out of. 944s stop a little quicker, but not much. 928s have a suspension which is held in very high regard even though the 944 is no slouch. both are fairly similar in upkeep cost if you do your own maintienance. truthfully though my opinion is drive both cars and see which you like more. also decide which one looks better. Both cars were top dogs for their day and are designed for the track. either way is a win win situation. both are fantastic cars.

It seems that the 928 has a serious weight issue. Can these cars (928) turn a good "fast lap for the buck" like a well chosen 951?

Anything in the 944 line is better than a 928. it's the nature of the beast. with a 928, you are making a statement...something like "I have money to burn on electrical issues and cars with funky keys." with a 944 you're making a statement like "I love life, women, and booze. I live life in the fast lane. screw you society, I'm awesome just because I'm a 944 owner!"

944 owners are the coolest people around...

and BTW, where the hell is 928 fest? yeah. they don't want a celebration of crap.

lol what's with talking **** about 928s.

928s are better cars (and I own a 944). The 928 was a supercar the 944 was an entry level porsche.

not sure about 944 turbo vs 928 though, never driven a 944 turbo.

one thing I know is that the 928 is more stable at high speeds

you may got the 944s beat in the straights, but watch out for them in the corners.

The 928S4, GT, and GTS are classed in the same class as the 944 Turbo S for PCA Club Racing. The 928S is classed with the 944T, S2, and 968. And the older 78-84 928s are in with the 944S.

But very, very few 928s are campaigned in PCA Club Racing. Probably not a coincidence, that few racers choose the 928 platform as a race car.

Money is often not one of the criteria, competitiveness is. Guys will pay big bucks to build the most competitive car they can for a particular class.

Lower production numbers are also not a reason. See a ton of 964 RS Americas being raced, only made 700 of those cars, and they show up all the time at Club Races in substantial numbers. Why - because they are fast on the track.

928s - too big and heavy to corner and brake with the smaller cars.

In stock form maybe. But money and desire does everything.

But let's get one thing clear. The automobile you are looking at this page is one of the four fastest production cars in the world. period. The Porsche 944 Turbo.
entry level is 924~boxter.
944 is a sports car.
928 is a GT car.
959 is a supercar.

The factory agreed when it chose to run a 928 and not a 924 in Le Mans.

Oops, maybe I mixed those up.

The 928 is a grand tourer, a very good one at that. Do not mistake it for a sports car, though.
