oh yes, with this program of race car conversion, everything must go. much of my interior, glass and even a stereo all un-bolts at the track. I get quite a few laughs during the conversion process. however, i can usually get to grid in an 1hour! (also good for more laughs)

I think you are right though. 2500lbs or so for a similarly gutted 944 vs 2700lbs for a 928. i did race one of the fiberglass bodied 944s back in 1999. i remember it was near 300rwhp (a stock 944T engine) but it only weighed 2200lbs. I forget his name, but i think it may have been one of dwayne dements customers. I think it was a touring Car Racing Assoc race. it definitely had some potential.

Also I was looking at S4 and GTS prices on here and autotrader and you can get a nicely moded and maintained for what those things are starting at. A GTS looks like it can run 30-50k. That's what you would expect for an already built 944 racer.

Very interesting reading. It is interesting to read between the lines (not that it is hard)...people have a (super) passion for these cars, they especially have a passion for their individual cars. I love it.

Anyone ever read the excelence article about 928's? Did it say the reason the 928 was not raced was due to the engine? Not sure, nor does it make any sense, as the factory race cars are so different from OEM (ie; Cadilac cars in IMSA).

Also......the S4 seems expensive.

Ive raced or been responsible for 4 928 racers so far. my current car has run the times ive quoted for over 6 full racing seasons, with no DNFs. as long as you run good synthetic Amzoil, redline, etc, you are in good shape.
thats 90+hours i have on my 928 engine and it still dynos the same and has the same compression test results on all cylinders.

if you want a car that can easily be converted to a race car, and be very fast for less money, the 928 reallly cant be beat.

again, 1:39.0 at laguna, 1:47.9 at sears point with only $1000 of engine mods (a set of headers)

Yeah. But how much in other mods, not just engine?

And how much does an S4, like you run, or GTS cost compared to a 951?

the other mods should be near equal.
both cars get a set of rim and DOT R tires
seat, belts, cage, set of racing brake pads, etc
bolt on suspension components (stiffer spring and a shock replacement) (for the 928 that can easily be $700 adder for both springs and shocks)
swaybar stiffener or thicker swaybar
and thats all.

The S4 i run you can buy from $5k to $10k depending on the shape. generally $7k for a decent one, ready to convert to a racer. Or, you can buy the older cars for near $2k and do a 5 liter euro conversion for near the power, and you need the S4 brakes for a near equal car, that would only be down on hp by about 20. about $4k of engine work to do that. the s4 is a cleaner, better way to go, unless you already own the older car .
GTS prices are usually way up there and dont buy you that much. bigger brakes, bigger (5.4 liter) and better engine and a better transmission. I think GTS models are in the $20 to 30k range. I dont know of one that has ever been raced.

Its nice to see this thread stay friendly. Mark, I always find myself re-reading the bonneville article. Each time I find myself hoping they reach the speed they hoped for. Funny though its always the same outcome at the end of the article, duh. Must be a blast to own a piece of history.
