Sorry for late reply ... yep I tracked it down and have since found another one in Japan to match. There is an NZ outfit called Moonlight Racing who bid for you on Yahoo Japan consolidate container shipping across from Japan. Really good guys to deal with. The 'Office' chair was actually in pretty goon nick other than the cover and was only $100NZ!! I've found some pretty reasonable prices to get 'exact match' recover including embroidery etc. Now need to trawl through this giant thread to find ref pics of seat detailing.

I'm wondering if the Porsche crest on Paul's (centrepunch) Cup Car was original spec?? .. and are the shoulder rubbing strips synthetic suede (alcantara) or some other grippy synthetic. The shape of the shoulder supports seem to be unique to those seats.

Hope these will do. My US car had a Canadian exhaust on it. It came with a little "tampon" to quiet it down for the street.

Sorry, no. It went down the center, then took a jog to the left, much like the OEM exhaust.

Found this 10 year old thread by googling, the photos don't show in the original post, but links still active.

The 904s have had decent returns on $ and fun combo, although I understand the 4-cam is not the easiest engine to own. I like the 550, but the $3.75M sale result two days ago of #0077 is clearly in the stratosphere these days. The other one I really like is the 910 Le Mans winner...

Only pic I have of what I thought to be an original Walker/Canadian Pragmatics RCTC exhaust - couple differences from the one shown in the pics above: this one has the front pipe section and flange (downpipe connection), no flange in the muffler/tail pipe section, and has a typical flanged WG dump pipe connection, not welded to the WG flange.

Hello.

Paul, as you requested, I post my 944 turbo cup question(s) here. First of all, this is a great thread with lots of info !

Earlier this year I was able to buy an original 1986 944 turbo cup car !
I am curently working on it, engine needed attention (check) now I'm redoing the brakes and the car is missing some of its original parts, since it is driving here in Belgium as a "regular" 944 turbo since 1989. It no longer has the Bilstein suspension, its missing the Roll cage and the Recaro Sport seat. Otherwise it is still correct with the 8J and 9J Fuchs wheels, matching numbers engine and gearbox, original interior etc. for those not so familiar with the cup cars : the 1986 cars are still much more standard then the later cup cars : no fiberglas front hood, no big brakes, no ABS, no welded in plates for extra body stength, a different model Matter cage, no magnesium wheels etc. 50 cars were build for the first European CUP series in 1986. No idea how much were built for the USA. These have different chassisnumbers (....15..... instead of .....10......) and are not included in the 50 euro cars.

I would like to find as much of the missing parts as possible. The Bilsteins are still available new, but not with the original spring setup. Most people now use 2 springs on each damper to replace the 1 (2 stage) Original spring. Does anybody here know if the Original style springs
could still be available and where ? Also a used set would be interesting !

Any information about where I could find a Recaro seat and Matter cage (later style will do as well (needs adjusting though) would also be great.

I'm also working on some kind of registry, to find out which cars are still out there and which car was raced by whom + its results in the 1986 races. Also here any info welcome : pictures, names, car info........name it. The factory / museum says that their archives have no detailled information anymore about this either.

Here's a picture of what the 1986 cars were like (mine is also red)

Thnx in advance
Kristof

Kristof
I recently bought a 1987 seat on ebay, thinking I'd put it on the passenger side, but plans have changed, so I'd resell it if you want it. It's missing the lower cushion. Didn't come with the mounts either.

As far as a registry, be sure to check out the Asarus site.

Kristof,

In some ways the '86 may be easier to restore to original, in other ways it may be more difficult.

Have you contacted Freisenger Motorsports? They can possibly come up with some interesting original motorsport parts. But may be expensive.

The 86 Matter cage will be hard to find. They were aluminum and of a different design than the 87+ cages (which were 1.50" x 0.095" wall steel tubing). Also, Matter continued to upgrade their 944 cage design year to year. So the cages that were installed in the '91 S2 Clubsports were not the same at the 87 Cup cars.

The '86 US Escort/Clubsport cars were unique, as they did have fiberglass hoods, but did not use the Matter cage, because aluminum was not legal in the SCCA race series. Not certain exactly how many were imported, at least seven and possibly a few more.

The Cup/Escort bilstein suspension that is currently available is the same as the 87+ cup suspension. The 87+ cup spring sets do show up on occasion, but the rears are getting very few and far between. The '86 Cups used a different, softer set of springs, both front and rear. The 86 fronts were a progressive wound spring with dead coils, similar to a weltmeister 200 or 250 lb/in spring. The rears were the barrel helper spring (same as the 968 M030 rear spring). There was no ride height adjustment on the rear shocks.

Lower front spring perches for the bilstein struts will also be very hard to find, for either the '87+ cup springs, and even more so for the '86 springs.

Too bad to hear that the factory has not kept historical records of the Turbo Cup series.
