Thanks for the reminder. I also did lots of autocross runs and time trial laps in my 2nd 914, sitting on the bare seat shell, mostly to get enough head room with my helmet on. When I built my SCCA IT 914 race car I used a stock-car style aluminum shell seat, bolted to the floor.

Another task I forgot before the paint shop: drilling holes for the engine compartment floor deflectors. I had the kit from 914 Rubber, with 5 mm bolts that screw into the molded plastic.

So, on to marking holes, drilling holes, and painting holes.

Test fit.

I picked up some of my engine parts at Competition Engineering in Phoenix.

Lots of air-cooled clutter.

Heads cleaned and checked, and complete valve job.

Crank measured and journals polished.

Yep, that place looks very familiar! Same old microbus out front!

Should have stopped by on your way out of town- I'd given you a couple Red Bulls. Not that far off the Bee Line Highway which I assume you took to get to Payson...

The counterpart to the surgically clean and organized shop.

Thanks for the offer. We made a fast trip from an to Tucson on I-10.

More progress in Tucson today. I dropped the fuel tank with one of the few shops that still does the "boil out" treatment.

I then visited with a local custom auto upholstery shop. Restoration purists can cover their eyes, but I am looking for something a bit different from stock. Based on the discussion and looking at swatches I might go with a stock texture vinyl for the console, center armrest-storage cubby, seat bolsters, and door card tops. Seat cushions, lower door cards, and the dash strip will be a light gray perforated artificial suede.

The door cards are in generally good shape, but have a bit of warping, especially on the driver side. I stripped the original vinyl so I could try to straighten the worst spots.

I sprayed both sides with water, placed them on flat concrete, and weighted them down with lumber scraps. We will see tomorrow if I made things better or worse.

Back at the upholstery shop. I think I will change the gray perforated suede for perforated vinyl. This will go on the seating surfaces, lower part of the door panels, and across the dash center.

I picked up the rest of my engine parts at Competition Engineering in Phoenix. Dan checked the case and tapped all the pug holes.

They also balanced the rods.

And sourced the new bearings and gasket set.

While at CE, we saw some other fun air-cooled stuff.

Picked up my gas tank today from the radiator shop. No more rust inside.
