Engine Ticking Noise

So update after 1 week of spyder ownership. Due to heat, i initially was driving top up, the engine whirring and chirping was very loud and distracting. But with the top down, the lower rpm sounds go away almost entirely and sounds just like my GTS 4.0. I still have a loud cricket like chirp when i rev above 5k, but it's not as bad as it was with the top up. I feel a lot better after driving top down lol. Moral of story, the spyder top is terrible, and don't use it unless you have no other option lol

I'm in agreement. My GTS 4.0 had no ticking as well, so i do believe there are cars without the sound. But that being said, the ticking isn't the only engine noise, there's a bit of transmission whine, intake sounds, and other NVH that comes through the cabin loudly before valves open BUT mainly with the top up. With the top down, the engine NVH is significantly reduced. At least from my personal experience.

I'd like to hear a recording of every 4.0L engine that purportedly has "no ticking" at all. I've never heard one. I'd also like the owner to listen to my video that I posted a link to above and try to duplicate what I did with the RPM's. Slow rev from 800 to 2000, back to 800 and then slowly back to 2000. If there truly are cars that do not chirp like mine, I am going to push PCNA to at least make mine better.

I've owned three Porsches with flat six engines in the last 10 years; a 981 BS, a 991.2 4s and now a Boxster 25. To me, they all sounded (sound) extremely cacophonous at idle (especially start up) and low revs. I only enjoyed the sound at higher revs. After almost a thousand miles, I admit that the 4 liter sounds the worst to me. It is quiet at cruising revs, 2-3k rpms so there's that. Above 4k rpms, it is raspy and it not at all a tone that I expected. What a conundrum!

How? With an aftermarket exhaust? I’ve done some research and they all sound way too loud to me. The sound that I’ve liked the most is JCR’s silenced backbox but I don’t know how loud it is. It seems to have a higher frequency exhaust sound like the 3.4 L in my old Boxster S.
I love the power delivery of the 4 liter compared to the turbo six in my 911 as well as the shorter throw shifter and the familiar mid engine platform but I am very surprised by the sound quality of the engine. The memory of my C4S is still fresh in memory and that engine while muted didn’t sound so uneven and gruff. The 992s don’t sound that different from my 991.2. I guess the big displacement 4 liter engine as well as how Porsche has engineered the sound for various reasons seems to have impacted sound quality in a very unexpected manner for me personally. The driving experience is excellent though. But I am beginning to build a 992 S on the configurator which is not a good sign for my wallet.

There are plenty of existing exhaust threads to bump…please keep this thread on purpose.

Update from my dealer visit. As suspected, there are no comparison vehicles so until one comes through the sales floor or the shop I am stuck at step one in the service bulletin. They do hear the sound but are following Porsche's process. Given that it took two years to get my car, it may be a stretch to find another example car. So continuing to wait here.

I went for a 100 mile drive this afternoon driving on mostly backroads in NH and paid attention to the sound from the engine/exhaust. I only heard the chirping/ticking noise at idle or when I came to stop. At speed, all I could hear was the muted exhaust note. Nothing untoward or unpleasant to my ears. As the revs and speeds picked up, I couldn't hear the chirping/ticking which is markedly present and noticeable at idle.
